The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network is a fully integrated network providing pathology services across five regional sites

We are inviting applications from enthusiastic, driven individuals to join our Haematology teams at the Barnsley and Rotherham sites.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will act as an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist providing scientific services to patients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. The successful candidate will be required to participate on the 24/7 out of hours rota and undertake a wide range of complex analytical procedures, performing a range of manual, semi-automated and automated tests using scientific knowledge and experience to comment upon and validate results in line with ISO 15189.

Suitable candidates will require Haematology experience post-registration and ideally have experience of working out of hours. Candidates must be in possession of an IBMS specialist portfolio in either Haematology or Blood Sciences, or equivalent to be appointed at Band 6. However, registered candidates either working towards or aspiring to complete their specialist portfolio will be considered for appointment at band 5.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network are invested in training, developing, and supporting staff in all aspects including academic courses from certificates of achievement, registration, specialist and higher specialist IBMS portfolios, apprenticeships and leadership and management qualifications.

The service across the network comprise of automated Blood Science departments on all sites, specialist haematology services including our Haemato-Oncology Diagnostic Service and Haemoglobinopathy services, specialist chemistry including Toxicology and Vitamin services, Paediatric and Newborn screening, and Point of Care.

Qualifications

Essential

  • IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
  • Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist
  • Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio or equivalent
  • Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies
  • Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio


Desirable

  • Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H& S, leadership, quality or training


Experience

Essential

  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques
  • Understanding of job content
  • Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices


Desirable

  • Discipline specific NHS laboratory experience
  • Multi - disciplinary awareness
  • Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities


Skills and Knowledge
