A new opportunity has arisen for a full time (10 PA) CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist, based at our 10 bedded inpatient CAMHS hospital in Westbourne which provides a comprehensive and outstanding service for young people between the ages of 12 and 18.

Main duties of the job

This full time opportunity focuses on working closely with CAMHS colleagues, to support the emotional health and wellbeing of young people across Dorset.

The postholder will work alongside another substantive Consultant Psychiatrist 0.6 WTE who will be based on the Ward and also work closely with Community CAMHS colleagues.Everyday you'll have the opportunity to make a long-lasting difference, create change and transform lives through working with young people ages 12 - 18 in our 10 bedded inpatient CAMHS hospital. We provide the following CAMHS services across Dorset:
  • 6 Community teams.
  • A 10-bed adolescent inpatient unit.
  • A dedicated CAMHS psychiatric liaison service to the three acute hospitals in Dorset.
  • A community forensic service for children and adolescents.
  • A specialist community service for young people with eating disorders.
  • A specialist community service for children and young people with intellectual disability.
  • An out of hours CAMHS crisis service.
  • A Discovery College for young people and carers.
  • Peer specialists employed within our community and inpatient teams.

The successful candidate must ensure the relevant professional registration is maintained, including Section 12, Approved Clinician, and Responsible Clinician status.

Job description Job responsibilities

All referrals to Pebble Lodge are screened and accepted by the senior team, and all patients admitted are reviewed by a section 12 approved doctor within 24 hours. During the working week this will be shared between the two Consultants. On weekends the on call consultant reviews newly admitted patients. Assessments form part of a formulation and care planning at 72 hours.

Clinical duties on the inpatient unit revolve around assessment and treatment planning for patients with complex presentations. Activities include direct face to face time, meeting families and community staff, reviewing records, clinical report writing and tribunal work, daily meeting with ward staff and CPA and discharge planning meetings. CAMHSprovides services for children and young people up to the age of 18 years.

There is a Transition Protocol to support young people moving between adolescent and adult mental health services. Both services are provided by DHC, and there are good working relationships between the relevant consultants and multidisciplinary teams.

The postholder will be expected to work with the inpatient base to coveremergency work and to keep waiting lists within the Trust agreed limits. This has been within four weeks for routine referrals from April 2011.

The inpatient base has a duty system which involves non-medical staff. There is usually a Section 12 non-consultant doctor who provides the first line medical support for emergency work during working hours. However, the postholder will be expected to play a part in covering the duty section 12 system.

The post holder will take part in the on call rota. The weekly on call rota is Dorset wide, at week-ends the East of the county is paid at 2% on call availability supplement PLUS 0.25APA and in the West of the county is paid at 3% on call availability supplement PLUS 0.75 APA .

This is a joint general adult, learning disability, child psychiatry and old age psychiatry senior on call rota supported by core trainees, higher trainees (Specialist Registrars) and SASG or ANP. At present, it is a 3-tier support in the East over the weekdays and 2 tier system when covering the West. There is also a non-resident junior doctor on call.

When on call the postholder is expected to provide advice and support to junior colleagues on call, out of hours nursing and social work colleagues. When necessary, it is expected that the on call consultant will review patients personally.

At weekends and on bank holidays there is a consultant led inpatient review for newly admitted patients to address problems with inpatients. This ensures that all patients admitted to our units are seen by a consultant within the first 24 hours of their admission andreview patients in longer term seclusions.

The postholder will provide cross cover for annual, study and emergency sick leave with the other substantive Consultant and cover can also be arranged via the wider group when designated cover arrangement is not possible. These cover arrangements will also take account the other medical staff in the locality team.

Person Specification Qualifications/Training Essential
  • General medical Qualification e.g. MBBS, or equivalent and hold a Licence to Practise.
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent, e.g. membership of a psychiatry college in another country.
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Additional clinical qualification.
Eligibility Essential
  • Must be in possession or within 6 months of possession of a CCT in Psychiatry or on Specialist Register in Psychiatry.
  • On Specialist Register in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Section 12(2) approval and Approved Clinician approval or ability to obtain approval before starting post
  • Experience of medicine outside psychiatry e.g. general practice, medicine.

  • Excellent knowledge in specialty.
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement.
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wider medical knowledge.
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.

  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within the NHS or comparable service.
