Dorset County Hospital therapy team are actively recruiting for a dynamic Band 7 Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to join our Front of House Team

The Team works closely with the larger Multidisciplinary Team to care for acutely unwell patients attending the hospital and through collaborative decision making with our colleagues we facilitate safe and rapid discharge from Emergency Department and acute admission ward.

The Therapies Service at Dorset County Hospital is an integrated Therapies Service working together to ensure that therapies provision is the best that it can be, balancing quality and acute pressures to provide and improve patient centred services.. The team is very supportive and there are lots of opportunities to develop both clinical and non-clinical skills, with access to internal and external courses.

It will be necessary to participate in weekend rotas in this role as part of a 7 day service.

Main duties of the job

As a senior therapist and team lead you will be required to demonstrate leadership skills and be confident to work as an autonomous practitioner with a focus on early assessment and discharge planning, with rapid and robust decision-making essential for efficient patient flow.

You will be familiar with the assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical, cognitive and psychological health conditions within elderly and medical specialities in order to develop and deliver treatment and discharge plans.

You will have the oversight of daily running of the therapy team (including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, and apprentices and support workforce) planning of caseload, annual leave, training, supervision

To promote and demonstrate safe, timely and appropriate discharge planning, in line with the Homefirst programme

To provide clinical guidance and the delegation of work to staff of all disciplines

Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy
  • H.C.P.C. Registration
  • Appropriate post graduate study in specialist field.
  • RCOT/CSP Membership


Desirable

  • Member of appropriate specialist interest group
  • Willingness to continue post graduate training. Evidence of documents/ certificate


Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • To have a broad base of experience at Band 5 and Band 6 levels or equivalent.
  • Proven clinical experience in the relevant field of acute frailty during Band 6 rotations in an acute hospital setting
  • Substantial post graduate experience working in Acute Assessment/Rapid Flow and Discharge settings.
  • Recent clinical experience working in an Emergency Dept
  • Recent clinical experience and knowledge in spinal patients
  • Evidence of treating patients with complex needs.
  • Experience of working closely with community services to facilitate early discharge from hospital.
  • Training of junior staff and MDT in relevant conditions, treatment and management.
  • Evidence of recent and relevant CPD.
  • Training of students on placements.


Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Strong knowledge of medical conditions, and their impact on cognitive, physical & social functioning
  • Advanced knowledge of a wide range of issues (physical, cognitive, environmental, social and political) impacting on the process of treating and discharge planning.
  • Highly skilled in the assessment and treatment of patients presenting with common pathologies including dementia, delirium and falls.
  • Demonstrate up to date knowledge of best practise and current research in acute elderly/frailty and medical care
  • Ability to organise, prioritise and delegate
  • Understand the legal responsibilities of the profession and their implications for practice
  • Understand clinical governance and its implications for service delivery and demonstrate evidence of its application i.e. audit.
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information (verbal, non-verbal and written) in accurate, clear and logical manner


Desirable

  • Evidence of developing service provision
  • Evidence of teaching skills Knowledge and understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and experience in carrying out Mental Capacity Assessments in accordance to the Mental Capacity Act.
