The post holder carries responsibility to develop and promote progressive palliative care specialist nursing, acting as a resource, support and educator to clients, carers and staff.

To be responsible for the day to day management of a clinical caseload of patients requiring specialist palliative care, pain control advice and psychological support to meet complex needs. Provide line management and mentorship to band 6 and below staff.

The post holder will provide specialist palliative care across the community, hospital and nurse led clinics. The Service operates 7 days a week and the post holder will be expected to be included in the rota to cover weekend working.

Main duties of the job

• Provide evidence-based specialist palliative care, advice and support to patients with a diagnosis of cancer or other life-threatening illness, and their carers. Working collaboratively with multi-professionals across primary and secondary and social care agencies including voluntary organisations
• Lead service development and educational audit and research projects
• Provide specialist palliative care advice, education and training to all professional groups of the multi professional team across all care settings as the service requires.
• Provide line management to band 6 and below staff
• Support the service in being compliant with CQC standards and ensuring their practice is evidence based and promotes patient safety.

education & Qualifications

Essential

• o1st Level Nurse
• oRelevant First Degree level or on degree pathway (E)
• oSpecialist qualification in palliative care or equivalent experience
• oNon Medical Prescribing qualification V300 or willingness to undertake
• oEvidence of recent continuous professional development in palliative care

Desirable

• oAdvanced communication skills training/ level 2 psychological support qualification or equivalent

knowledge

Essential

• oAwareness of current issues in palliative care.
• oKnowledge of management and treatment of the patient with Palliative Care needs in line with National and local guidelines

Experience

Essential

• oWorking at a senior level -Band 6 or above for 2yrs
• oSubstantial experience of dealing with patients with complex palliative care needs.
