The Norfolk and Waveney Community Perinatal Mental Health Service (PMH) is seeking a Specialty Doctor to join its Community Perinatal Mental Health team. You will have an exciting opportunity to join an expanding Community Perinatal Mental Health Service including a Maternal Mental Health Service in partnership with local maternity services.

Parent-Infant therapy, family therapy and increased partner support is being developed further alongside the offer of preconception counselling and the assessment and management of both the acute and the complex perinatal mental health presentations.

The PMH Service is delivering on its access targets and has had agreed funds to expand in keeping with the NHSE Long Term Plan. The Service takes pride in providing a range of therapeutic interventions and peer support and is committed to the co-production of the developing Service with women who have or have had lived experience.

Main duties of the job

The perinatal world is small but also relies on close inter-agency relations with colleagues ranging from Obstetricians to Neurologists to GPs on the medical front, to Midwives and Nursery Nurses on the maternity front, to a panoply of therapists not to mention third sector and service user/patient advocacy groups.

We are looking thus for someone who can communicate with a wide spectrum of people to achieve the best level of care when making difficult decisions. Someone who can lead the MDT in ward rounds and CPA meetings, collaborate with a young person's wider family and community support structures and work with all to fashion a planned and creative transition towards discharge and beyond.

About us

We invite applications for doctors from different specialty backgrounds as long as imbued with a passion for the perinatal period. Relevant experience varies widely as the work encompasses the biological and immunological, forensic, psychotherapeutic (individual, systemic and parent-infant) as well as social worlds.

Responsibilities include
  • Providing medical treatment within a model of multi-disciplinary care
  • Supporting prescribing of medication
  • Physical health monitoring
  • Preparing clinical reports
  • Liaising with other clinical teams within and outside the Trust

Diane Hull - NSNHSFT

Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust is the main provider of specialist mental health services for the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, serving a population of 1.6 million people. We are a large organisation covering a wide geographical area divided into ‘Care Groups'. There are also Care Groups supporting children, family and young people’s services, and specialist services, including Forensic mental health services.

Each Care Group has its own Leadership team, with the aim of supporting clinically led decision making locally, to support the needs of people accessing services.

We have inpatient facilities across both counties with smaller bases in rural locations. Many of the Trust’s services are offered in the community, enabling people accessing services to receive the support they need in an environment familiar to them.

At NSFT we believe in recovery and wellbeing, and understand the importance of good physical health, maintaining relationships and achieving a balance between treatments and continuing an active life.

The people in our care, families and carers are at the centre of all aspects of all we do and are vital in helping shape and support our service strategy. Our strategy supports and enables people with mental health problems to live a fulfilling life and make their personal recovery journey.

Locals say hello to each other, baristas remember our coffee orders and you’ll be among the first to know about interesting local projects.  This strong sense of community, along with excellent shopping, eating out, affordable house prices and excellent schooling is why Norwich has been ranked by the Guardian as the UK’s best city to work in.
