We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Research Nurse to lead the Research Nursing staff in our dynamic Research and Innovation delivery team.

With a strategic and operational overview, you will have responsibility for developing and sustaining knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with post-registration education and practice (PREP) and monitoring and developing the standards of Research Nursing within the department.

Working alongside Trust staff dedicated to research activity, and in close collaboration with researchers and clinicians from within Mersey Care and our partner organisations, you will play a key role in the ongoing development of Research and Innovation within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Responsibility for supervision & management of research nurses, junior staff, Data Manager & Administrator, ensuring all members of the research nurse team undergo regular and effective appraisal.
  • Assessing patients/ volunteers for eligibility for research & ensuring high standards & continuity of care.
  • Liaising with relevant trial personnel & contributing towards trial design & protocol & undertaking an active role in the research ethics process.
  • Providing ongoing participant support through advice & information to patients/ volunteers regarding their participation in clinical research, maintaining lines of communication with participants & carers.
  • Assessing & evaluating the progress of ongoing clinical trials & research undertaken.
  • Digesting & assessing the appropriateness of research design, protocols & methodology, understanding practical application within the local requirements of the trial & demonstrating an understanding of the analytical process.
  • Using appropriate procedures to report.
  • Applying specialist knowledge of the roles of NRES, GAfREC & RECs.
  • Ensuring that policies & procedures of the Trust are adhered to, working within NMC professional code of conduct for nurses, midwives & health visitors, with responsibility for the management, development, review & updating of SOPsand other relevant departmental & Trust protocols.

Qualifications

Essential

  • NMC Level One Registration.
  • Masters level qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • ICH GCP & EU Clinical Trial Directive certificated.
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development.
  • Post registration teaching qualification (e.g. 998 or mentorship course).


Desirable

  • Relevant post registration qualification.


Knowledge/ Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience of working within an NHS environment in a research role.
  • In depth understanding of research methodologies including phase I - IV clinical trials.
  • Professional knowledge and experience of running/leading clinical research/ trials.
  • Significant post registration experience in research nursing, managing own portfolio of trials.
  • Able to clearly demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of current UK clinical trial regulations, good clinical practice.
  • Experience of collaborating with other agencies.
  • Experience delivering specialised programmes of care and provide highly specialised advice for patients (and healthy volunteers if applicable) who are participating in clinical trials.
  • Training and education of nurses and other health care professionals.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships.
  • Evidence of accuracy to detail in data collection.
  • Prior line management and experienced in supervising staff.
  • Awareness of the financial impact of research within the Trust.
  • Experienced in problem solving.
  • Utilising research-based evidence.
  • Recent use of audit.
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, email, internet).


Desirable

  • Project management experience.
  • Clinical Research Related Training.
  • Experience of the clinical care of patients/ research participants enrolled in both commercial and noncommercial research.
  • Experience of working to defined metrics, including recruitment, project plan and risk analysis.
  • oExperience of working as a research nurse within the National Institute of Health Research Clinical Research Networks
