The main duties of this post are providing addiction psychiatry consultant leadership to the Wandsworth Community Drug and Alcohol service. It is an existing post and the vacancy has been created by the departure of the previous post holder.

Main duties of the job

WCDAS provides community substance use disorders (SUD) treatment for the residents of Wandsworth . It provides a full range (both clinical and recovery-oriented) personalised and evidence based treatments for the spectrum of SUDs including opiate substitution, alcohol detoxification and a community recovery programme (abstinent and non-abstinent). It offers comprehensive assessment, harm reduction, physical health and mental health interventions (in conjunction with local partners) as well as model-informed psychological interventions directed at substance misuse e.g. MI and relapse prevention.

The post holder will lead the clinical management of the service and provide many of the clinical interventions where needed. They will work closely with the Clinical Team Leader (lead nurse), Recovery Team leader and Psychologist in the local service.

About us

The Addictions CAG, which incorporates SLAM addictions, aims to combine strengths in clinical service provision, policy, teaching and research. It operates in a matrix structure with the Lewisham and Addictions operational directorate. It provides community services in a range of partnerships with voluntary sector agencies for the London Boroughs of Lambeth, Wandsworth, Richmond and Bexley as well as an alcohol assertive outreach team which operates across Lambeth and Southwark and an Alcohol care team in KCH.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership for WCDAS.
  • Deliver high quality medical and psychiatric assessments for patients.
  • Lead the delivery of evidence-based pharmacological treatments inkling a full range of OST and alcohol detoxification.
  • Work with others to ensure there is a robust clinical governance system in the service.
  • Take part in developing and collecting clinical outcome and performance data.
  • Provide clinical supervision to others in the team including non-medical prescribers.
  • Provide clinical guidance and advice to other clinical partners across the borough. Build positive and supportive relationships with fellow clinicians in Wandsworth
  • Ensure clinical protocols are evidence based and up to date.
  • To liaise with colleagues in other partner agencies and primary care where needed with regard to the management of patients.
  • Participate in SLaMs quality systems by contributing to audit, quality improvement projects and clinical research.
  • Contribute to the investigation of incidents and complaints as required.
  • Attend directorate, trust and CAG meetings.
  • Teach medical students (from KCL) and junior medical colleagues. Teach across the Addictions CAG e.g. the Addictions MSc.
  • The post holder will be expected to have section 12 approval and AC status.
  • Contribute to the achievement of all performance targets.
  • Contribute in working with commissioners and SLAM addictions on new service developments.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • CCT in General Adult Psychiatry with addictions endorsement or within 6 months of gaining CCT at time of interview


Desirable

  • Relevant higher degree eg MD, MSc, PhD or other clinical qualifications


Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience in all aspects of addiction psychiatry


Desirable

  • Experience of working in community addiction services at consultant level.


Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure high quality care and staff morale
  • Knowledge of recent developments and therapeutic advances in addictions


Desirable

  • Management experience in the organisation and development of services


Quality improvement

Essential

  • Thorough understanding of principles of QI. Must have undertaken and completed QI projects.


Desirable

  • Evidence of service development


Teaching

Essential

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching


Desirable

  • Experience of providing training and education to a large range of staff
