An exciting opportunity is available to join the altered airways clinical nurse specialist (CNS) team on a fixed term 12 month secondment. The CNS acts as a key worker, providing an expert nursing service to patients with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy, alongside the multi-professional team. Candidates must have significant experience and a passion for airway management and delivering excellent patient care. They must demonstrate confidence within this field and be a team worker and motivated towards delivering high standards. They will be supported in decision making and improving knowledge and skills by working with the team leader. Candidates must have clinical skills such as competence for altered airway care. They must be confident to deliver teaching and support to patients and their families. They can expect to work in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Main duties of the job
Key duties:
Be a key worker for a patient group, including head and neck cancer and a range of specialities, attend multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to plan and action patient care including routine tracheostomy set changes
Work autonomously in managing a case load of patients including nurse led clinics
Support respiratory weans with eventual decannulation
Act as a specialist resource for knowledge and delivering teaching sessions to Trust staff
Support pathway of inpatients from surgery through to discharge
Support with service development and audit

Qualifications
Essential
- *Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
- *Evidence of post registration CPD / post registration qualification in altered airway management or relevant alternative or professional knowledge supplemented by specialist experience and short courses to FHEQ Level 6
- *Evidence of completed tracheostomy management competency
- *Expanded practice in decannulation procedure
Desirable
- *Evidence of training or courses related to airway management or head and neck cancer care.
- *Competence in tracheostomy set changes
Experience
Essential
- *Evidence and ability to revalidate as required by the NMC
- *Significant post registration experience, with evidence of passion/ enthusiasm and knowledge for altered airway management.
- *Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development/ competence
- *Demonstrate specialist knowledge underpinned by theory and CPD relevant to altered airway management.
- *Experience and enthusiasm for teaching/assessing and supervising others in a clinical setting
- *Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary and cross agency work environment
- *Demonstrate understanding / experience / willingness to be a practice-based supervisor / assessor as detailed in the NMC
