CLINICAL SERVICE LEAD CAMHS National & Specialist Inpatient services

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Service Lead to provide operational and clinical management across the CAMHS National & Specialist Inpatient services.

The successful applicant will provide leadership across four inpatient wards and will be responsible for ensuring care is delivered to a safe and high standard in each service area.

Working closely with the CAMHS General Manager, inpatient Ward Managers and the MDT to provide high quality care, your focus will be on supporting staff to improve and deliver a clinically excellent, patient centred inpatient service.

This post is a great opportunity to develop or build on existing management and leadership skills. You will need to be innovative, dynamic and able to work autonomously.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Service Lead provides operational and clinical leadership to the staff who deliver care to children and young people who have challenging and complex needs across the following inpatient wards:
  • Bethlem Adolescent Unit - General Adolescent Ward
  • Snowsfields Adolescent Unit - General Adolescent Ward
  • CAMHS PICU - Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit
  • Acorn Lodge - Children's Unit

The post holder will lead and support multiple teams to ensure optimal clinical outcomes are achieved as well as maximising effectiveness and efficiency of service provision. You will ensure mechanisms are in place to support develop and monitor all aspects of performance. You will be key to ensuring the delivery of clinical excellence, delivering high levels of nursing care by providing day to day support and operational leadership. You will be responsible for ensuring quality standards are not only achieved but sustained by providing compassionate leadership, embracing continuous improvement and have the ability to work in collaboration with children, young people & their parents/carers. As an enthusiastic and effective leader, you will demonstrate dedication, professionalism and set a clear vision for your teams. You will be a visible presence who influences and supports effective teamwork and promotes a positive culture. You will lead by example and motivate your teams to provide exceptional levels of care to the children and young people on the CAMHS inpatient wards.

Job description Job responsibilities

1) Service Management:To have daily clinical and operational oversight of four CAMHS inpatient units.

2) Quality:

To support all wards to achieve and retain national accreditation.To ensure high levels of performance are maintained including patient safety, patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes and follow clinical pathways and protocols.To produce high quality and timely reports and action plans to ensure recommendations are implemented and lessons learnt.To provide demonstrable assurances around compliance against National and Trust standards for physical health care.To ensure all staff are qualified for their posts and competences are maintained.To coordinate and manage Datix compliance and to work with colleagues in the nursing and quality team to implement training and staff support where necessary.

3) Financial performance:To ensure the delivery of the services falls within the resources available and that the wards run smoothly, utilising their capacity in terms of beds.To manage delayed transfers of care and to escalate these accordingly to ensure consistent and appropriate throughput on the wards.The postholder will liaise with the CAMHS General Manager, Deputy Director and Finance Business Partner, partners in the South London Partnership to seek appropriate resolutions to challenges that impact on financial and business continuity risk areas.To manage and ensure appropriate use of bank and agency staff and to provide assurance the bank and agency usage accurately reflects acuity and enhanced observation levels.

4) Leadership:To provide strong effective and decisive clinical leadership to ensure a high standard of care is achieved.To be visible in clinical areas eg: handovers, goal setting, reflective practice, care quality meetings. To work with the clinical teams to embed models of care that maximise the skills and contribution of all members of the multidisciplinary team.To ensure effective interface and continuity of care between internal and external stakeholders and within the South London Partnership.

5) Research:To actively participate in and encourage research activity.

6) Service Improvement & Innovation:To contribute to service improvements and support staff in taking the lead.To lead on service developments in response to commercial opportunities.To ensure staff are engaged in continuous quality improvements initiatives.

7) To deputise for the General Manager in their absence or as required, attending meetings asrequested. To provide cover in the absence of the Ward Manager.

8) To participate in the CAMHS on- call manager rota, in line with agenda for change payment

Person Specification Qualifications Essential
  • Mental Health Nurse (RMN (A)
  • Masters or equivalent experience (A)
  • Management or Leadership Course (A)
Experience Essential
  • Previous experience at Band 7 level, including managing change, ensuring standards are maintained and a proven track record of introducing new ways of working. (A) (I)
  • Experience of multi-professional collaboration at a senior level.
  • Experience of developing audits and monitoring and evaluating standards of care with 'clear outcomes
  • Current experience of relevant clinical practice in CAMHS
  • Experience of working in both Inpatient and Community CAMHS
  • Experience of managing non-clinical staff and other professionals
Knowledge/Skills Essential
  • Knowledge of relevant current policies and the implications for this specialist area (A)(I)
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and policies associated with Mental Health Care; including MHA, MCA, CPA Procedures. Equality act and Human Rights Act
  • Knowledge of Infection Prevention and control, understanding of current policy issues and their implications for clinical environments
  • Knowledge of common HR issues and procedures
Skills & Abilities Essential
  • Ability to be a leader and inspire teams
  • To have the physical fitness to participate in team restraint and immediate life support training and maintain a level of competency which requires refresher training every 2 years (A)
  • Able to communicate complex and sensitive issues to a range of audiences
  • Able to advise on clinical issues, demonstrating an understanding of professional guidance, local and Trust policies
  • Able to identify and establish credibility and good working relationships with representatives of external agencies and partners, and manage those relationships with sensitivity and diplomacy
  • Knowledge of common HR issues and procedures
