Welcome to Devon Partnership Trust! We would like to invite you to apply for the Consultant Psychiatrist post in Old Age Psychiatry at our award winning Inpatient Unit. Beech ward is a 16 bedded inpatient ward for functionally ill older people. Beech ward is located at Torbay Hospital, Torquay. The expansive rural nature of Devon means that inpatient resources are often some distance from patients' homes. There are units for functionally ill older people in all three main population centres - Torbay (Beech Unit), Exeter (Rougemont) and Barnstaple (Meadow View). Older people who need admission for organic problems are admitted to Belvedere Unit in Exeter.
The Beech Unit team has always sought ways of delivering more person centred care and in 2011 we abolished conventional ward rounds and piloted, then adopted, Planning My Recovery Meetings (PMR meeting). Each patient on the ward has their own PMR meeting weekly with the consultant and key members of the Unit team. The Beech Team have a supportive ethos and are keen to hear from patients who use the service how we can improve our service. As a team we have developed our own team Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) which is on display for all patients and visitors to see.
We are an expanding organisation providing a full range of mental health and learning disability services for a population of over a million people, as well as a range of specialist and secure services for the wider region and nationally.
Main duties of the job
You will take part in on-call rota and other consultants from the area will be expected to provide cross-cover for leave.
You will be well supported by a dedicated full-time medical staffing department.
This post is suitable as a first NHS consultant, an existing or post-retirement consultant with a broad level of general adult psychiatric expertise. International candidates are welcome to apply. Experience of working in adult community mental health services is preferable but support will be given to doctors wishing to move from other psychiatric specialties or roles.
Approved Clinician status at appointment is preferable but those who would be eligible eg doctors applying from abroad, will be supported to obtain this authority.
We have excellent IT and full electronic record across our services and are in the process of a clinician-led design of our own clinical record system.
Patient safety and Quality Improvement are key aspects of the role and training will be provided if required. Programmed Activities are negotiable for research, teaching, medical management and other special interests.
There will be junior doctor support on the ward for the post holder. The post will be supported by dedicated admin and there will be private office space available. For full details about this post, please refer to the Job description.
