Our Cardiothoracic PICU is a Supra -Regional Unit, caring for children and families from all over the UK, Ireland and Europe with an age range of 0-18years.

We take admissions from across the United Kingdom and further afield for cardiac surgery, bridging to transplant (ventricular assist devices), heart /lung transplant and a type of advanced heart and lung life support known as ECMO, (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation). We are one of only two centres in the United Kingdom who can carry out heart/lung transplantation in children.

PICU is extremely diverse. Children on our unit are cared for on a 1:1 basis, as they require continuous individual 24-hour care. Children on therapies such as ECMO or the Berlin Heart require a 2:1 nurse ratio. You will undergo specialist in-house training to develop our scope of professional practice to perform extra duties.

Main duties of the job

You will get opportunities to learn nursing skills surrounding the critically ill child in areas such as fluid and nutrition management, infection control, Intravenous administration including medications and blood products, Communication skills, Ventilation and respiratory management and Extracorporeal devices.

We offer an extensive 12-week preceptorship programme aimed to facilitate your learning, skills and confidence. Our preceptorship programme aids the transition of the new nurse into the PICU environment, which incorporates periods of time on both Ward 23, HDU and PICU GNCH to allow a complete multidisciplinary approach.

Staff are well supported with psychology, clinical supervision and the national 'SWELL' programme.

• Accountable for assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating high quality patient care in the Peri-Operative environment.
• Provide effective support to both patient and carers throughout their care pathway.
• Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students, participating in mentor and preceptorship programmes.
• To abide by Trust policies and procedures.
• Provide support for and depending on experience deputise for nurse in charge in their absence.
• Act as patient advocate in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code / Health and Care Professions Council standards of conduct, performance and ethics.
• Work collaboratively as an effective member of MDT.
• Participate in 24 hour on call service when appropriate to role.
