Main duties of the job
The Microbiology and Virology Department at UHS has an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Technician to join their existing Research and Development Team.
The role is part of the growing diagnostics support team working with clinical scientists and other scientific technicians, looking at molecular assay development and roll out, and expanding the current repertoire of tests. We currently use the Nimbus Presto, Qiagility, and ABI PCR platforms.
There will be the opportunity to support the diagnostic laboratory in everyday patient testing.

Qualifications / training required

- BSc (Hons) degree in an appropriate biological science related subject area e.g., clinical microbiology.
Desirable
- MSc degree with emphasis on clinical microbiology
Previous or relevant experience necessary

- Experience of working in a laboratory with demonstrable competence in most basic laboratory skills

- Experience of working in an automated laboratory environment
- Good understanding of basic theoretical and practical microbiology
Aptitudes and skills required

- Ability to critically analyse and interpret scientific data
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organisational and planning skills, prioritising tasks and duties as necessary
- Knowledge of laboratory IT systems and range of other applications including MS Office

- Ability to use judgement and decision making in order to resolve issues and for troubleshooting any faults, errors or anomalies
