This post is open to Nurse and Allied Health Professionals with relevant theatre experience.

The post holder will have continuing 24-hour responsibility at Band 7 for the Theatre Unit Team.

The role is to ensure effective communication within, and external to, the unit. To promote excellence in practice and expedite quality issues relevant to the service and to utilise the unit's resources cost effectively including staffing hours.

Main duties of the job

  • Professionally, the post holder is responsible for maintaining registration with the appropriate Healthcare Professional Council, NMC or HCPC abiding by their Code of Conduct and Guidelines and will adhere to Trust policies, procedures and protocols.
  • To be responsible for the delivery of patient centred care, maintaining own specialist knowledge and skills within the area of specialist orthopaedic, participating in direct patient care.
  • Take the lead role in the provision of clinical and professional advice, expertise and support.
  • Responsible for the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of care to ensure individual needs are met, supported by written evidence. Facilitate a patient/client focused approach to care.
  • Facilitates and maintains patient records to ensure information is accurate and up to date for future reference. All documentation should comply with Data Protection Act, NMC/HCPC Record Keeping Guidelines
  • Responsible for ensuring the department and practice meets NHSLA & CQC standards and that specialist association guidance e.g. AfPP, is adhered to.
  • Occasional/frequent provision of patient care, which requires the use of physical effort to roll and position patients.
  • Act as patient advocate within theatres and associated areas/departments

Job responsibilities

Operational management/Service Development

The post holder will act as an expert within their speciality, empowering nursing staff and other allied health care professionals to develop the highest possible levels of clinical skills and facilitate communication with all care groups.

The post holder will manage the service delivery in accordance with the directives set in the Theatre Directorate as specified in the directorate business plan and will be responsible for allocating and facilitating the scheduling of theatre time/activity and co-ordinating the skill mix of staff.

They will provide delivery of safe, high quality patient- focused care within the multidisciplinary team, ensuring all resources within the unit are used to optimum effect and are used in the most cost effective manner, including agency usage.

They will also have to perform any job related duties not specifically enumerated in this job description which may be assigned by the Nurse & AHP Clinical Lead Theatres.
  • A high level of interpersonal communication skills is expected from the post holder to deal with the highly complex situations and interpersonal issues that arise from both the future and daily list planning that this post involves.
  • Coordination of the department on a rotational basis with other Band 7 departmental managers, ensuring daily safety briefings are undertaken and communicated to all teams. Completion of daily sit rep returns reporting deviations to planned schedule, cancellations, resource issues.
  • Daily liaison between Recovery, Admissions, TSSU co-ordinator, Inpatient areas, Day Case, Scrub, Anaesthetic Practitioners and medical teams, operational team including promoting and maintaining effective liaison throughout the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Responsible for problem solving on a daily basis to ensure continuity of patient care, by identifying problems with equipment or staffing, such that cancellations and postponements are minimised and that theatre time is utilised to optimise efficiency. Responsible for escalating any issues which cannot be resolved to Nurse & AHP Clinical Lead Theatres/Theatre Services Manager, reporting to the Assistant Chief Nurse MSK Unit when these issues cannot be resolved
  • Take an active role in the implementation of and evaluation of clinical trials of new procedures, equipment and instrumentation responsible for effective liaison and collaboration with procurement when introducing new products to the environment.
  • Responsible for the deployment of theatre team appropriate to the specialist theatre/team requirements in line with funded establishment
  • Familiar with and actively promote effective and timely recording via the Theatre Management System, facilitating effective measurement of Theatre Utilisation Metrics
  • Responsible for monitoring and coordinating staff activities within specialist area of practice
  • Develop and maintain links with other departments ensuring safety and efficiency within surgical patient pathway on day of surgery.
  • Ensure all equipment and instrumentation is available, in working order and that staff are appropriately trained in its use.
  • Keep Nurse & AHP Clinical Lead Theatres informed of changes in circumstances that may affect the delivery of care and/or operational delivery of scheduled/planned surgery
  • Active involvement in weekly Booking and Scheduling Meeting, ensuring required information with regard to the provision of resources, pay and non-pay, are escalated in a timely manner.
  • Respond to formal and informal complaints/concerns raised regarding area of responsibility.
  • Active involvement in procurement process, for equipment, specialist instrumentation and trials of above, ensuring appropriate training and education is in place prior to implementation.
  • Deputise for the Nurse & AHP Clinical Lead Theatres as delegated, ensuring operational quality and management is maintained. To be actively involved in facilitating audit, supporting and implementing necessary changes and service improvements within the department and/or surgical patient pathway

  • Significant experience leading a theatre team in the perioperative setting
