An opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced nurse to join the Enhanced Supportive Care (ESC) Team at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust (BHRUT). This is an exciting opportunity to join our nationally unique nurse led service that was recognised by NHS England (2018) as best practice in cancer care. BHRUT provides care for a population of approximately 750,000 people across North East London and number is predicted to increase by 15 per cent over the next 10 years. Our services include all the major specialities of large acute hospitals, operating from 2 main sites- King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queens Hospital in Romford. The team covers both sites and the applicant would be expected to be able to access both. The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) will provide specialist support to patients at the point of diagnosis of incurable cancer, throughout the treatment of disease, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, best supportive care and beyond. The ESC CNS has a key role in working clinically with the oncology multidisciplinary team, including but not exclusive to medical staff, site specific clinical nurse specialists and allied health professionals. The post holder is expected to proactively recognise patients with non-curative cancer who have unmet symptoms, psychological, social and spiritual needs by completing a thorough holistic needs assessment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be working closely with the Enhanced Supportive Care Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist to continue to implement the nurse led service model in oncology. The Enhanced Supportive Care model aims to address more fully the needs of cancer patients- in particular, preventing and managing the adverse physical and psychological effects of cancer and its treatment. This is achieved by following the six principles of ESC.

The post holder will work both autonomously and as a team member focusing on embedding the ESC nurse led model of working within the secondary breast cancer community at BHR.

The post holder will be a key role, working alongside colleagues in oncology, palliative care, the community and wider MDT. The post will involve clinical responsibilities, outpatient and inpatient work, nurse-led face to face, telephone and virtual clinics.

About us

Under the leadership of our Chair Jacqui Smith and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, we provide care for the residents of three of the most diverse London boroughs. More than half of our 7,500 strong workforce are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and most live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals, operating from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London.

As we recover from Covid-19, we're proud to be leading the way nationally in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The pandemic provided the drive forour teams to innovate and change.

We know we have more work to do to improve waiting times for urgent and emergency care, and our performance against the four-hour emergency access standard remains challenged, in comparison to many other London trusts.

We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre Radiotherapy Centre Hyper Acute Stroke Unit and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We're also pleased to be part of the NEL Cancer Alliance.
