We are delighted to be able to advertise a new post within our Speech and Language Therapy Service at GOSH.

We are looking to appoint an experienced clinical expert to join our Surgical Speech and Hearing Team. The successful candidate will be recognised as a clinical expert in the assessment and management of communication disorders including speech, voice, resonance and breathing. They will have knowledge and skills in the instrumental methods that support both assessment and intervention in this caseload. Referrals are through surgical pathways, including ENT, Complex Airway, Cleft, Plastics and Maxillofacial. Knowledge of Functional Neurological Disorders is also relevant. We are keen to attract both those with previous experience of work with CYP and those who may be wishing to transfer their skills from the adult sector. You will have a proven track record of supervising staff, and of project management and transformation. You will work collaboratively to coordinate expert and efficient clinical care across the surgical speech specialities with direct management support from the Team Leader for Surgical Speech Services.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a very high level specialist speech and language therapy service consisting of assessment, differential diagnosis, treatment and management for in and out patients with communication and airway difficulties arising from a wide range of rareand unusual medical conditions. This is often within the context of multidisciplinary team setting, including attendance at case planning meetings and joint clinics.
  • To take on a leadership role within a designated area of the S& LT Surgical Speechand Hearing Service, supporting the team lead to provide a high quality, evidence based service. This will include identifying areas for service development and implementing change
  • To work as an independent practitioner accessing the Department's supervision system, and seeking and maintaining peer support from other specialist practitioners in line with Clinical Governance and professional guidelines
  • To monitor and evaluate own highly specialist service delivery and provide progress reports to the Team Leader/Clinical Expert
  • To present the specialist subject in an evidenced based framework and at an appropriate level to a wide range of audiences (e.g. parents, teachers, medical colleagues, Allied Health Professionals, consumer groups) in consultation with the team leader/clinical expert
  • To initiate, plan and implement research, development and audit activities in conjunction with the Team Leader, Head of Speech and Language Therapy and the multi-disciplinary tea

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential

  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Qualifying Degree or equivalent
  • Registered Member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Recognised postgraduate courses/training in communication difficulties associated with voice, complex airway and head and neck surgical interventions (Adults and/or Paeds)
  • Health Professions Council license to practice
  • Basic level dysphagia competencies
  • Training in clinical and student supervision


Desirable

  • Post accreditation Master's Degree
  • Formal Leadership Training


Experience/Knowledge

Essential

  • Assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of children presenting with communication difficulties arising from complex voice and head and neck disorders e.g. structural AND neurological changes and complex airway.
  • Evidence of providing SLT interventions for children/young people/adults with structural and/or functional neurological communication challenges who are under a head and neck team.
  • Evidence of applying service improvement/research methodologies to clinical practice
  • Experience in student clinical supervision
  • Experience of interdisciplinary team working
  • Experience of using informal and formal speech, voice and language assessment techniques and tools for children across a range of age groups.
  • Evidence of Level B EDS competencies and application within clinical practice to either adults and/or CYP.
  • Evidence of teaching SLTs and other professions
  • Knowledge of a broad range communication assessment tools relevant to caseload.
  • Knowledge of the impact of cultural issues for SLTs working with this caseload


Desirable

  • Experience of working in a hospital setting
  • Knowledge of Instrumental Diagnostics and their Interpretation in the relevant caseload.
  • Evidence of Basic level tracheostomy competencies and application within clinical practice.


Skills/Abilities

Essential

  • Ability to modify communication skills and style to meet the needs of the communication partner, sometimes in challenging and stressful situations.
  • Experience of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of complex communication disorders
  • Skills in communicating outcomes of assessment and management plans to relevant internal and external professionals e.g. paediatricians, schools, speech and language therapists, play workers
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, sustained concentration and empathy with patients and relatives who themselves may have a range of complex communication impairments and other needs.
  • Demonstrable expert specialist skills in the management of communication problems related to people with complex special needs.
  • Basic level competencies in the assessment and management of dysphagia.
  • Able to manage the emotional consequences of working with patients with a range of feeding and communication disorders and supporting colleagues with these situations
  • Highly developed negotiation, analytic and problem-solving skills
  • High level verbal and written presentation skills
  • Demonstrable self-organisational skills, including prioritisation of the caseload
