We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic individuals who possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team within the fast pace environment of the Paediatric Emergency Department.

We are looking for Senior Sister/ Charge nurses who can demonstrate a kind, compassionate, positive attitude, with a desire to provide effective and efficient urgent and Emergency Care practice.

As a senior member of the nursing team you will be expected to support and lead staff within the Paediatric Emergency Department acting as a role model and working cohesively with the multidisciplinary team.

You will be expected to assist senior nursing staff with management requirements ensuring that quality service is maintained. You are expected to participate in education throughout the unit and hospital and ensure quality is maintained.

Main duties of the job

- The post-holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care as part of the multi-disciplinary team from admission to discharge using research based practice.- To deliver care in accordance with the regulatory body's code of practice and the Trust's and ED policies and protocols. To be aware of the organisational and nursing strategy.- Ensuring safeguarding issues are acted upon promptly and appropriately.- Participation with auditing effectiveness and incorporating findings into practice.- Participation in the trust's achievement of quality and financial targets, locally and nationally driven.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To maintain a clinical knowledge base and practice advanced accident and emergency skills. To supervise others in the delivery of these skills
  • To work with the multi-disciplinary team to proactively identify areas for improving nursing practice and service delivery.
  • To work with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure key performance clinical indicators for the Emergency Department are achieved
  • To support the Matrons to monitor and implement the performance targets for the department.
  • To actively participate in the selection, recruitment and induction of new nursing and HCA staff.
  • To be responsible for setting, implementing and monitoring acceptable standards of care for patients within the unit in conjunction with the other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To challenge practice so that the best and most appropriate treatment is given to the patient.
  • Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for patients, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of cleaning. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents for the area in liaison with the Clinical Nurse Manager and Divisional Risk Manager.
  • Responsible for facilitating staff appraisals and supporting the achievement of PDP objectives, in line with the Trust appraisal system and with the Trust values.
  • To undertake further educational qualifications and training in order to increase professional knowledge and remain updated
  • To act within the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct.

Person Specification

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Part 1 Registered Nurse - Child or equivalent.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding
  • APLS
  • Children's A& E Course


Desirable

  • APLS
  • Manchester Triage Competence
  • Leadership Course
  • Management experience


EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Post-Registration qualification in Children's Emergency Nursing or equivalent.
  • Currently working in Emergency Nursing
  • Proven emergency nursing experience
  • Evidence of further study.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE - SPECIAL

Essential

  • Clinical documentary competence in: -IV Drug Administration -Plastering -Minor Injury Assessment & Treatment
  • Ability to coordinate and lead nursing care in individual areas of the emergency department.
  • Specialist emergency care knowledge enabling the delivery of a high standard of clinical care to the patients, supervision of staff and support for all grades of medical staff
  • Ability to anticipate the changing workload and to make effective decisions to allocate staff accordingly
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with the patients the multidisciplinary team emergency services and the outside agencies necessary for the efficient running of the department
  • Proven leadership qualities necessary to lead the emergency team
  • Ability to deal with relatives in stressful or bereavement situations, giving a high level of support and advice.
  • Able to recognise the potential for physical or verbal violence and take action to defuse the situation.
  • Ensure correct use of IT system, and be aware of the importance of information
  • An understanding of professional issues relating to safeguarding the child and family.
