We are looking for a Band 5 operating department practitioner to work in theatres, recovery, admissions/ ambulatory lounges. The post holder is responsible for assessment of the perioperative care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation without direct supervision. At times they will have management responsibility for being in-charge of the ward and supervising junior members of staff. The post holder will be a key member in relation to the development of practice in theatres. They will be working independently/autonomously and at times without direct supervision, accountable for their own professional actions. Ensuring the safety and well being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centered care principles.

Admit surgical patients

Scrub/ circulating in operating theatres

Recovery post operative patients

Work with multi-disciplinary in ambulatory care post-operative lounge

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work closely with the senior staff and multidisciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent clinical standards of clinical practice and staff development as part of the theatre team.

As a member of the theatre team perform the tasks of anaesthetic assistant following all checks and procedures as laid down in National / Theatre Policy.

As a member of the theatre team perform the tasks of anaesthetic assistant and support other members of the multidisciplinary team.

To be responsible for the continuing professional development and overall performance of all staff by acting as a mentor with the support of their senior colleagues.

The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant documentation without direct supervision and is required to demonstrate procedures in place to support safe patient care

To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified as appropriate to knowledge and training.

Person Specification

Education/ Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner on the NMC/ HCPC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality


Desirable

  • Teaching & assessing qualification


Previous experience

Essential

  • Experience of working on own and in a team
  • Experience of working in the relevant area
  • Completion of preceptorship
  • Supervision of junior staff


Desirable

  • Previous experience in other nursing fields


Skills/Knowled ge/ Ability

Essential

  • Able to assess, plan, implement & evaluate programmes of care
  • Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues.
  • Competent in basic life support


Desirable

  • IT skills Awareness of the structure and organisation of the NHS
