Paediatric Surgical Specialist Nurse

To provide a comprehensive service to children and young people within the specialist area of paediatric surgery. The post holder will work closely with the surgeons and the surgical units and will be required to provide support, education, and care for babies and children.

As part of the specialist MDT the post holder will provide direct patient care and support to patients and their families and help improve quality of life by educating the patient and family on the management and control of symptoms and offering support following diagnosis. The post holder will be a resource for other health professionals and will develop, implement and evaluate care packages for this specialist group of patients.

Main duties of the job

  • Develop, manage and deliver a faecal continence programme (bowel management) to children with lower gastrointestinal conditions, stomas and faecal continence problems across the inpatient and outpatient setting (including the neonatal ward). This includes performing, supervising and teaching rectal washouts, anorectal dilatations, stoma care and assessing suitability and carrying our bowel irrigation techniques. Stoma care will be provided with support from the adult stoma team who currently provides support for stoma care in children.
  • Act as the lead nurse in the care of children and young people with complex upper gastrointestinal conditions. This will include supporting patients who have gastrostomy or gastro - jejunostomy tubes pre and post operatively and teaching families and carers the correct use and care of the feeding tubes.
  • Support patients who attend the Jenny Lind Children's Hospital requiring acute thoracic surgery, including supporting ward staff, patients, and families with the care of chest drains.
  • To support surgical patients who attend Jenny Lind Children's Hospital requiring management for CVAD including supporting staff and families, teaching around use and care and supporting with any issues.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse on the appropriate part of the NMC Register
  • Evidence of professional development ongoing since qualification including a post registration qualification relevant to the specialty.
  • Proof of continuous update in specialist areas of paediatric surgery and paediatric Gastroenterology


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience caring for Neonates, children and young people under paediatric surgery.

  • Able to perform clinical skills relevant to the speciality
