Band 7 - Clinical Nurse SpecialistPermanent contractFull time - 37.5 hours per weekThe postholder will work within the Acute Oncology (AO) specialised cancer nursing service to support cancer patients presenting as an emergency relating to their cancer or treatment. The post holder will also provide oncological advice to the local medical or surgical team managing their care. These include but are not limited to patients with suspected neutropenic sepsis, suspected metastatic spinal cord compression, malignant hypercalcemia, newly diagnosed disease within an emergency admission, including new disease progression or recurrence of previous malignancy. The post holder will contribute to the patient's symptom management and recommend or prescribe if able for his/her patient group. Ensure that patients' cancer pathways are managed according to guidelines and protocols. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be expected to support the Acute Oncology ward rounds up to 3 times a week and triage appropriate patients for the Consultant to review.
The role also includes supporting patients who present with a malignancy of unidentified origin (MUO) or cancer of unknown primary (CUP). The role requires working as an integral member of the Acute Oncology Service, facilitating identification of such cancers and advising on investigation.
Main duties of the job
To provide acute oncological specialist nursing support to patients and their families whilst they are inpatients at Tameside hospital. To work within the acute oncology service alongside the Clinician and other members of the AO team. To lead clinical care whilst supporting members of the multidisciplinary team and the wider trust team.
