Job Purpose:

To undertake the role of Team Leader and accept continued responsibility for the direct and indirect support of staff in the provision of post anaesthetic care management of all patients and staff in the recovery area.

To ensure efficient flow of patients and theatre through put and the smooth running of theatre lists, effective deployment and supervision of the team working within the department. Teaches and supervises pre-registration students, unqualified staff, registered nurses and ODPs, non-nursing staff and patients.

To always be up to date and manage and support all staff within recovery areas with the support of clinicians, theatre management and theatre coordinators.

Maintain an environment which is conducive to the delivery and maintenance of a high standard of care and the establishment of good communications and relationships between staff, patients and visitors.

  • Specific Duties and Responsibilities

To practice according to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.

To be aware of resuscitation, fire and moving and handling procedures.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised patient care needs and to ensure nursing care is delivered in a holistic manner.

To maintain patient and staff confidentiality at all times.

Co-ordinate the services with other disciplines to ensure that the total patient care needs are identified.

Ensure that all patients receive a high standard of individualised patient care according to local and Trust policies.

Participates and facilitates in the promotion of patient education and health promotion.

Provide skilled assistance to the surgical team in theatre ensuring that local and Trust policies are adhered to.

Ensure that patient documentation is accurate, comprehensive, reviewed and updated when necessary.

Maintain good communication with all healthcare staff.

Ensure the safe custody and safe administration of medicines in line with Trust policy and procedure and report any discrepancies.

Be responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of equipment and the environment within the department.

Maintain, review and improve standards and practices with reference to recent research findings.

Participate in the on-call and weekend shift system as required.
  • Clinical Responsibilities

To promote a work based learning environment for all staff.

To be responsible for own personal and professional development through research, innovation and attendance at suitable study days.

Facilitate the on-going education of staff within the theatre complex including, preregistration students, post basic students, unqualified and qualified staff, bank and agency staff.

To extend own education, including management skills.

Actively participate in the Trusts appraisal system and undertake individualised performance reviews.

Undertake extended roles of care within the department as authorised by the

Nursing Advisory Committee.

Management Responsibilities

Manage the operating room efficiently and effectively according to local and Trust policies, ensuring that the theatre operates smoothly on a daily basis, engaging with other departments as required.

Be aware of Health and Safety at Work policies.

Be responsible for supporting the team and providing skilled assistance and advice to staff and the surgical team.

To act as a specialist practitioner and liaise with the surgical team and other Departments.

To be a key member of the multidisciplinary team, ensuring good communications with other departments.

Supervise the maintenance of equipment and reporting any faults

Deputise for the Theatre Coordinator/ Recovery Manager in their absence

Assist with stock control, manage stock levels and assist with the ordering of supplies as required.

Ensure efficient use of all resources.

Actively participate in establishing appropriate systems within the department for the monitoring of quality standards facilitate audit services, risk management and complaints and act upon them accordingly.

Assist the Theatre Manager / Theatre Co-ordinator in ensuring annual risk assessments are undertaken and that outcomes are identified and actioned.

Report any potential or actual complaints/untoward incidents to the Theatre Manager/co-ordinator and participate in the Trusts Risk Management process.

Be flexible with working hours to facilitate the smooth running of the department.

Professional responsibilities

Assist in promoting an open and friendly working environment.

Receive visitors into the department.

Undertake department projects pertinent to the speciality.

Participate in nursing audits assist in the setting and evaluation of standards of care.

Orientate new staff, learners and temporary staff to the department and hospital.

Encourages a good working relationship with the multi-professional team and to attend multi-professional meetings as appropriate.

Promotes effective multi-professional collaboration and practice throughout the unit.

To be aware of and practice in accordance with the Trusts policies and procedures.

Ensure working awareness of RNOHT policies and procedures.

Maintain patient and staff confidentiality at all times.

IT Skills

All staff are required to demonstrate a level of IT literacy skills appropriate to their job, as the use of IT is fundamental in delivering good quality efficient health care.

Post-holders must maintain the confidentiality of information about patients, staff and other health service business in accordance with the Data Protection of 1998. Post-holders must not, without prior permission, disclose any information regarding patients or staff. If any member of staff has communicated any such information to an unauthorised person those staff will be liable to dismissal. Moreover, the Data Protection Act 1998 also renders an individual liable for prosecution in the event of unauthorised disclosure of information. Following the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) 2005, post-holders must apply the Trusts FOI procedure if they receive a written request for information.
