An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 staff nurse to join our friendly and energetic team on the Centre for Urgent Care and Royal Marsden Macmillan Hotline.

As a Band 6 you will be required to assume responsibility for co-ordinating shifts on a regular basis, support the Ward Sister with daily, weekly and monthly audits and support staff in their development as well as developing skills as a leader within the Trust. You will work closely with the Acute Oncology Service as well as other teams around the hospital. The role will involving working both on the unit and hotline, providing the opportunity for the staff nurse to develop their assessment skills. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and clinical skills and will enjoy working as part of a team.

Main duties of the job

• To coordinate and supervise a shift, communicating effectively with members of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, evidence-led care to patients.
• To effectively plan, manage and evaluate care of patients that are being managed on the unit including acute oncology patients, surgical and haematological patients
• To work on the hotline (triaging, advising and prioritising patient care)
• To exercise clinical judgment and decision making about patient needs in terms of long term goals orplans.
• To support junior staff on the unit
• To act as a role model to others on the unit
• To actively take part in conducting short teaching sessions on the unit
• To be engaged in quality improvement

• To provide skilled care and expertise in venepuncture and/or cannulation. To assess patients for a suitable central venous access device. To provide education to patients on the care andmanagement of central venous access devices and to adopt a problem solving approach to managing complications with all vascular access devices.
• To be knowledgeable of any treatment in progress in the specialty they are working in, and to adopt a problem solving approach to symptom management and minimizing adverse reactions. Once suitably trained and dependent on the clinical area, administer / check cytotoxic drugs, intravenous antibiotics, novel therapies, trial drugs and supportive therapies, including all necessary blood products.
• To look after all patients in protective and contact isolation as necessary with strict infection control measures, while educating and giving psychosocial support to them, their families andmore junior members of staff.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential

• NMC Registration
• Evidence of ongoing professional development
• RMH Certificate in Intravenous Drug Administration or to be obtained within three months of appointment

Desirable

• Qualification in oncology or speciality Diploma or Degree level study (or equivalent) Recognised teaching qualification

Experience

Essential

• Experience in intravenous drug administration
• Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job

Desirable

• Experience in chemotherapy administration
• Experience in Clinical Management
• Evidence of relevant teaching experience
• Knowledge and understanding of clinical trials management

Skills Abilities/knowledge
