Band 8A Practitioner Psychologist

WTE can be less than full time to suit postholder

Band 7 preceptorships available for less experienced candidates

Role will equally suit candidates interested in gaining valuable early career experience in preceptorship roles (Band 7) and more experienced candidates commencing in highly specialist roles (Band 8A). Post will be embedded within Renal Care medical/surgical MDTs, working alongside a wide range of professionals (including practitioner psychology/counselling colleagues) in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Some sessions may be delivered working from home.

Main duties of the job

Provision of high quality, evidence-based psychological care to patients and their families and carers of respective medical/surgical speciality.

Support the ongoing improvement of psychological pathways in speciality.

Provision of consultation, training and supervision to MDT colleagues around issues pertaining to psychological models of working such as stepped care and trauma informed practice.

Working autonomously with an appropriate clinical caseload.

Research, service development and project work.

Opportunities to develop additional competencies/undertake CPD and professional training in keeping with yearly appraisal/service needs as well as objectives of the wider physical health psychological services across Greater Manchester.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • oProfessional qualification in relevant Practitioner Psychology Doctoral Degree (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.
  • oRegistration as a clinical/counselling/health practitioner psychologist with the HCPC.


Desirable

  • oTraining in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological relevance (e.g. staff training, research methodology, and / or other fields of applied psychology)


Experience

Essential

  • oExperience of working with client groups in a physical health setting, presenting with the full range of clinical severity. This includes maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the possible threat of physical abuse.
  • oExperience of working as a qualified clinical/counselling/health psychologist (less experienced candidates may be appointed at Band 7 and work towards 8A competencies)
  • oExperience in the application of cognitive-behavioural approaches to clinical settings
  • oExperience of working within a multidisciplinary team.


Desirable

  • oExperience of working within acute medical/surgical trauma environments, delivering evidenced trauma focused psychological interventions.
  • oExperience of providing supervision and training


Knowledge

Essential

  • oDoctoral level knowledge of research design and methodology, including complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the field of clinical psychology
  • oKnowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.


Desirable

  • oKnowledge of legislation in relation to adult/child clients of the Renal Care service, and of relevant mental health legislation.


Skills

Essential

  • oAbility to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and to liaise effectively with other professionals.
  • oSkills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.


Desirable

  • oSkills in providing consultation to other professionals and non-professional groups
