We are seeking to appoint an experienced Senior Ophthalmic Photographer to assist in leading and developing the Ophthalmic Imaging service. The Ideal candidate will therefore have extensive experience and expert knowledge in ophthalmic imaging processes and systems.

This is an exciting opportunity where you will lead and develop the high-quality diagnostic services to assist clinicians to diagnose, monitor and treat complex eye conditions. The right individual will facilitate an environment which provides extensive learning and development within the team.

Main duties of the job

This role will provide supervision to the diagnostic services at the Eye Infirmary as part of the imaging team, ensuring the efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources to provide a service which reflects the highest standard of clinical effectiveness and patient care. The post holder will provide supervision and have task manager responsibilities including training Ophthalmic photographers, Ophthalmic imaging technicians and administrative staff.

You should be technically minded, show a keen attention to detail and demonstrate a strong commitment to high standards of patient care. You should have a passion for patient-centred care and demonstrate behaviours that reflect our trust values. You will work closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team and should have experience and skills in teamwork and be able to demonstrate your ability to work effectively as part of a team.

The Ophthalmology Directorate, within which this post is based overall comprises 282 staff from a diverse set of professional backgrounds working into a number of sub specialities including: Cataract Treatment Centre, Theatres, Diabetic Retinal Screening, Eye Emergency Department, Macular, Paediatrics, Optometry and Orthoptists who provide a range of services within the inpatient and outpatient settings.

The service currently operates Monday to Friday 8am 8pm however the occasional weekend working may be required to support service elective recovery.

Job responsibilities

The purpose of this role is the production of diagnostic and follow-up images, on a variety of modalities, to the highest possible standard. As a Band 6 photographer the post holder will be required to make critical judgements about how best to produce the appropriate images for the benefit of the clinical staff and patients, based on a good understanding of the anatomy of the eye and common Ophthalmic conditions. He/she will always be mindful of the patients being imaged and be aware of any physical constraints and how they may be overcome. Participation in clinical trials, under the guidance of the lead research photographer, will necessitate certifications with the various clinical trial reading centres.

To support in providing a professional, cost effective, efficient clinical and nonclinical photographic service using digital technologies to service the Trusts three sites.

To ensure a high technical standard for clinical assessment, patient records, teaching, research and publication purposes.

To perform administrative tasks as necessary for the efficiency of the service.

Person Specification

Physical skills

Essential

  • Moving and Handling
  • The process of using imaging equipment requires constant bending
  • and twisting and repetitive hand movements.
  • Requirement for speed and accuracy, keyboard skills.
  • Able to meet the travel requirements of the role as the post is
  • required to work across multiple sites.


Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in Photography or related subject.
  • BSc in Medical Illustration or equivalent.


Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake a variety of
  • photographic diagnostics / investigations including:
  • Fluorescein fundus angiography
  • Indiocyanine Green Angiography
  • Retinal and anterior segment photography
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) OCT A
  • Slit lamp photography
  • Cornea and retinal tomography and have a clear understanding of
  • the indications for performing each test
  • Ability to maintain image databases for all clinical work undertaken
  • Proficient in use of IT packages Excel / Word


Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience in Ophthalmic Photography.
  • Some practical experience of studio and ward/theatre medical
  • photography.
