Older Peoples Mental Health Inpatient Organic Service Western Community Hospital Southampton S016 4XE.

Are you passionate about Older People and their mental health and dementia?

We are looking to recruit a Clinical Psychologist to work with older people with complex mental health difficulties in the OPMH organic in-patient service at the Western Community Hospital, Southampton. This exciting and developing service provides care to older people with dementia and their carers. This will include assessment and intervention and also assisting in an exciting training initiative to upskill the inpatient staff team particularly using the Newcastle model.

The responsibilities will include the provision of psychological assessment (including neuropsychology) and therapeutic interventions to older people and their carers in the inpatient setting, to be a source of advice to the multi-disciplinary team on psychological issues and to offer consultation and advice to other mental health and physical health professionals. Supervision of an assistant psychologist will be part of this role and possibly a trainee Clinical Associate in Psychology and a clinical psychology trainee if appropriate. Contributing and leading service development will also be required for candidates at 8a level. Candidates who have an interest in neuropsychology will have an opportunity to develop these skills further.

There are currently 8 other Clinical Psychologists working with older people in the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust who meet regularly for supervision and peer support. There are close working relationships with Adult Mental Health Services and the University of Southampton, which is the base for the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology Course. There are opportunities to be involved in teaching trainee clinical psychologists and for collaboration with other professional tutors, academic staff and research.

The post could be appointed as a preceptorship towards an 8a role for the right applicant wishing to develop from a band 7 or be appointed at 8a. Responsibilities would be adjusted accordingly.

Applicants will automatically be considered for other similar vacancies in OPMH.

Please note candidates need to be qualified clinical psychologists (or be on an appropriate training course) and registered with the Health Care Professions Council or clearly state on their application how they are planning to achieve this registration.
