The Cellular Pathology department based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro is looking to appoint a highly motivated, enthusiastic, suitably qualified and experienced candidate to join the department as a Senior BMS in the Histopathology section as an expert in tissue dissection.
The department receives approximately 37,000 histopathology requests a year which includes samples from the 900 Coronial PMs performed. The department includes a modern immunocytochemistry / molecular biology unit & provides a Rapid On-site Evaluation (ROSE) service to the EBUS/EUS clinics. Where over 300 samples a year are processed, assessed & reported on-site.
As a Senior Biomedical Scientist the post holder will be expected to work within the professional standards as a registrant of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and maintain a portfolio of evidence supporting Continuing Professional development (CPD). The post holder is also required to either have the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection or be currently working towards completing the diploma.
The post holder will be required to conform to agreed standard operational procedures, policies, good laboratory practice and comply with the standards as required of ISO15189:2022 and the Human Tissue Authority.
Main duties of the job
This post will be suitable for either an experienced BMS who is looking to further their career or a Senior BMS looking for new challenge.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient running of the Histopathology dissection service and the supervision of the team within the section, in co-ordination with the other senior BMS with dissection responsibilities. The successful candidate will be actively involved in tissue dissection. They will be expected to maintain training /competency of staff, ensuring compliance with national standards and accreditation bodies & be responsible for health & safety within the section. Experience in managing and/or supervising of a histopathology laboratory will be essential.
This is a full time, permanent post. The hours are currently within a framework of 07:00 - 17:00 hours including weekend and bank holiday working. These arrangements are subject to continuing review

- To be actively involved in histological dissection of samples in category A, B & C, and some samples in category D & E under supervision.
- To provide advice, guidance & teach new/inexperienced staff in the techniques used within histopathology, in particular dissection.
- To deputise for the Lead BMS & senior staff in other sections, as required
- To perform all relevant HR related tasks such as monitoring sickness absence, recruitment of new staff & to the perform staff appraisals
- Apply the departmental quality system to all aspects of work & be actively involved with quality management.
- Observe and apply the Directorate and Trust Health, Safety and Security policies
