The post consists of assessment and management of patients with severe and enduring mental illness in the community of Salford. There is ample opportunity for development of a range of skills, including domiciliary assessments MDT interactions report writing, MHA work teaching, training and supervision of junior doctors and medical students managerial, research and clinical governance work.

Prescott house itself has around 800 patients, the current active case load for this position is 160 patients on standard care. The successful applicant would assess 2- 3 new patients a weeks, and conduct 3 follow up clinics, each with 5 to 6 patients.

The candidate will be expected to be section 12 approved or be eligible for approval and become involved in Mental Health Act work for patients in both roles.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work with Dr Ingram as part of the CMHT at Prescott House and would be managerially responsible to him. The post is community based with most work being undertaken at Prescott House. This will include new patients, follow up appointments, attending the weekly meeting with the CMHT, taking part in CPA meetings and conducting home visits. There will be at least 2 new patient assessments per week and 10-15 follow up patients (which will include CPA reviews) spread over two clinic sessions and a third flexible clinical session, which allows for the possibility of emergency work - this amounts to no more than 1PA per month of MHA work and associated clinical admin.

The post holder would be expected to see emergency assessments following a duty assessment (by care co-ordinator rota) and would also be expected to engage in Section 12 work for patients allocated to their teams. The CMHT has the acute assessment role of a crisis team as per the local Acute Care Pathway (ACP) which means that all referrals to secondary services are triaged in community teams and assessed before referral on. The post-holder would provide advice and support to other members of the team, primarily for their own case-load but also for new patient queries and general advice.

From time to time it may be necessary for the post holder to carry out such other duties as may be assigned, with agreement, by the Trust. It is expected that the post holder will not unreasonably withhold agreement to any reasonable proposed changes that the Trust might make.

The Trust actively supports the involvement of the specialty doctor body in regional and national groups subject to discussion and approval with the Medical Director and, as necessary, the Chief Executive Officer.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Possession of MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
  • Other Postgraduate degrees e.g. MSc, MD, MRCP
  • Section 12 (2) Approval under Mental Health Act 1983 or be eligible for approval within 6 months.


Experience

Essential

  • Experience in detention of patients under the MHS (1983)
  • Experience of writing reports for the Mental Health Review Tribunals
