An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, motivated individual to join our team as a Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) within the Paediatric Palliative Care & Bereavement Support team at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and St Michael's Hospital.

The successful candidate will work alongside existing members of the Team. They will contribute to the delivery of paediatric palliative care and bereavement support by providing expertise in complex decision making, advance care planning and holistic symptom control.

They deliver high quality holistic care for babies, children and young people with life-limiting or life-threatening illness and their families from diagnosis, throughout life and during end of life care. This is supported by a commitment to a model of facilitating and empowering others, it ensures that all staff have the required knowledge & skills to deliver care of the highest quality. The Team also coordinates bereavement support for families following the death of a child at the hospital. Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical expertise in palliative care by
  • Providing professional and clinical leadership and support to nursing and medical staff within BRHC relating to palliative care and bereavement
  • Providing expert advice relating to symptom control
  • Having an ambassadorial role when liaising with professionals from outside of BRHC, championing paediatric palliative care
  • Facilitating the development and practice of evidence based paediatric palliative care within BRHC in line with the advance care planning and NICE guidelines
  • Supporting the advancement of family focussed palliative care through a collaborative approach with all members of the multidisciplinary teams
  • Supporting and advocating for timely conversations with families ensuring the provision of choice in place of care.
  • Supporting children with palliative care needs and their families whilst they are in-patients at BRHC.
  • Outreaching to professionals from all children's hospices, community settings and other outside agencies.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Appropriate post registration experience in nursing and of caring for families with palliative care needs
  • Appropriate proven leadership and management experience


Desirable

  • Commitment to and experience of teaching
  • Evidence of commitment to research based practice or evidence of project work undertaken
  • Experience as preceptor / mentor


Skills & Abilities

Essential

  • Good organisational and management skills
  • Competency in medication administration including intravenous medication
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Able to manage difficult situations
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small team but also autonomously when required or to lead


Aptitude

Essential

  • Flexibility and adaptability meeting the needs of a changing service
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Act as a role model and as a mentor/assessor
  • Commitment to the development and provision of high quality nursing care
  • Awareness of current national changes in nursing / NHS
  • Awareness of professional responsibilities to self and others


Training & Qualifiations

Essential

  • RSCN / RGN
  • 1st Degree in nursing or health related subject or willingness to work towards
  • Current NMC Registration


Desirable

  • Relevant accredited post registration qualification e.g. in palliative care
  • Qualification in Teaching, assessing and Mentoring
  • Willingness to work towards Masters level academic study
