The band 6 OPAT Specialist nurse will care for many patients on the OPAT program, many of whom have differing healthcare needs. They will utilise their clinical expertise and specialist knowledge to deliver high quality evidence/research based care to the OPAT patient.

This care will take place in the infusion centre, our clinics and in the community setting.

There is an element of lone working.

The post holder will be expected to use their experience to support the implementation of clinical governance to improve patient services.

They will be required to work flexibly as a member of the OPAT team to ensure standards are being maintained, evaluated and where necessary improved .In addition to the obligatory clinical skills, the practitioner may be required to develop a range of additional skills or techniques that fall outside the usual scope of nursing practice, including line placement.

Main duties of the job

As a OPAT Nurse specialist your responsibilities will include

Co ordinating all aspects of the OPAT service.

Assessing patients to provide the optimal delivery option for their treatment. This will involve teaching patients how to self administerAdministering intravenous antibiotics in the community and at homeAdministering OPAT treatment in the OPAT infusion CentreManaging your own workloadYou should be interested in holistic care with a keen interest in infection. You should be affective communicator and want to deliver high standards of care.Lone working out in the community is a large part of this role so autonomous decision making will be key component . out in the community.

The post holder must be able to drive and have access to a car which can be used and is insured for work purposes.The post holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

  • Current registration with appropriate professional body.
  • Diploma/ Degree in Nursing or Health related Studies or equivalent experience.
  • Completion of all local competency packages or has undertaken WINW packages essential to role and specialty

  • Degree in health/nursing related studies or working towards
  • teaching/ experience

  • Must be able to work hours to suit service need and have current driving license and to drive to a variety of locations

  • Significant post registration experience, in appropriate clinical setting
  • Can demonstrate professional autonomy and effective decision making skills when managing caseload, seeking support when appropriate
  • Ability to manage clinical area/ward efficiently and effectively
  • Experience in using relevant hospital IT systems
