This is an exciting opportunity to be the Lead Nurse for Acute Oncology (AOS) and Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) at the Royal Free London. The Lead Nurse will provide clinical nurse leadership to co-ordinate the delivery of a comprehensive acute oncology service working collaboratively with other members of the team. The post holder will manage a small team of nurses and work across the Royal Free Hospital and Barnet Hospital. The post will incorporate the dimensions of expert clinical practice, education, leadership, management and research.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will provide overall responsibility for the provision of specialist nursing advice and support for patients with an actual diagnosis of cancer or when cancer is initially suspected, from their period of investigation, diagnosis, treatment and possible transition into palliative care. The post holder will have responsibility for advanced nursing assessment on the oncology assessment unit.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be required:

to provide expert advice to patients and implement patient care in an area which requires high levels of judgement, decision-making and discretion

to enable the development of robust pathways for patients who use the service, both on the telephone and face to face

to line manage the acute oncology nursing team

in collaboration with the Clinical Lead for Acute Oncology, identify and interpret (at local level) the priorities for delivery of acute oncology, co-ordinating service development and implementation across the Trust.

to be responsible for excellent standards of nursing care to patients through the planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating nurse-led assessment and services.

to liaise with all key members of the multidisciplinary team to advise and support colleagues in the delivery of specialised patient care across professional boundaries.

to work autonomously to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of the patient group and based on principles that are research based and enhance the quality of patient care.

to lead and support with specialist nursing knowledge the development, and implementation of programmes of nursing care for individual patients and the client group as a whole.

to contribute to training and education within specialist area.

to promote an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through reviewing the evidence base and embedding this in practice through engagement in research activities.

to scope any unmet needs for this group of patients.

to act as a visible role model and expert practitioner.

to ensure the acute oncology service meets all national targets and embeds changes to best practice. Ultimate responsibility for the collection of key performance indicators and externally reportable data.

Experience

Essential

  • oSubstantial experience in a senior nurse operational role in an acute NHS setting within oncology
  • oKnowledge and experience of leading significant change, delivering tangible and sustained improvements
  • oProven ability to initiate audits/research & assess evidence
  • oExperience of developing business and workforce plans in line with future service requirements
  • oExtensive knowledge and experience of practice and policy across a broad range of responsibilities, e.g. financial systems & budgetary control, corporate and clinical governance, health & safety and human resources
