A vacancy exists for a band 5 HCPC registered biomedical scientist in the haematology department. This role will require the postholder to rotate through haematology, coagulation, and blood transfusion performing a wide range of investigations in a busy pathology department.
Main duties of the job
This post requires use of previous experience and developing new skills in line with the departmental training and competency framework. CPD is encouraged as part of this role.
The department is accredited to ISO 15189.2012 and BSQR 2005 and all staff are required to adhere to defined quality procedures and processes related to these. Additionally staff must work safely with potentially hazardous samples in line with laboratory COSHH and risk assessments.
The department operates 24/7 and is very busy so the postholder must be able to concentrate for extended time periods to successfully complete investigations and report results within laboratory turnaround times. Participation in this rota is required after suitable training. The postholder will be expected to be conversant with pathology IT systems and different types of automated analysers. Experience in blood film morphology is required.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Analysis of specimens according to defined protocols.
Monitoring and maintenance of analytical equipment.
Initial troubleshooting of analytical problems.
Compliance with laboratory health and safety policy including COSHH and risk assessments.
As an independent practitioner of biomedical science, responsible for efficient organisation of own workload, usually under the overall supervision of the Senior BMS and Lead BMS.
Adherence to quality control procedures.
Technical validation of analytical results using appropriate quality checks. Initiation of repeat analysis if appropriate. Referral of analytical problems to supervisor where appropriate.
Ensure patient confidentiality is upheld and information governance is adhered to.
Participation in rostered duties for delivery of the laboratory 24-hour service, according to the agreed contract. Participation in the out-of-hours service includes a duty to maintain continuous cover, including cover for sickness, in conjunction with the other participants.
Use of laboratory computer software as required, including data entry and validation, spreadsheets and word processing.
Documentation for UKAS including validation and verification data.
Ensuring the EQA samples are processed and reported in a timely manner.
Answer telephone enquiries for results, etc., and transfer calls appropriately.
Always maintain a professional approach to work and deal courteously with all enquiries.
Monitoring of stocks and spares, as required by Senior or Lead BMS.
Maintenance of knowledge and skills appropriate to haematology, including participation in the departmental training programme and CPD, attending mandatory training as required by Trust policy.
Teaching and training of trainee BMS and MLAs.
To assist in the evaluation of new methodologies and equipment.
To have a commitment to identify hazards, minimise risks, risk assessments, report all incidents and notify the manager of any risks that may need assessment.
To be aware of the responsibility of all employees to maintain a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors and staff.
To take an active part in the Laboratory Quality Management System and UKAS accreditation ensuring skills on EQMS are up to date.
The post-holder must at all times carry out their responsibilities with due regard to the Trust's Policies.
To ensure that all duties are performed to the highest possible standard and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
Participate in annual appraisal with your line manager, including a review of this Job Description.
Actively participate in Continuing Professional Development, maintaining a portfolio of evidence.

The Trust requires all roles requiring DBS check, to have a satisfactory DBS recheck every three years (this frequency may be updated by the Trust)
Be responsible for maintaining own vaccinations that are applicable to the role.
Safeguard patient confidentiality at all times, including adherence to the Data Protection Act and Information Governance requirements.
Attend statutory and mandatory training and refresher courses as necessary.
