We are pleased to be able to offer a fixed term/secondment opportunity for a mental health professional to join our complex health team in one of our Children and Young people mental Health Specialist roles.

This role will be until 31st March 2026.

You will have post-registration experience of working with and supporting people under the age of 18 who have mental health needs.

Their expertise and knowledge will support the continuing service which we provide in Ipswich Hospital for young people who have been admitted with mental health related needs.

The CYP specialist posts have grown and developed in the two and a half years since they were introduced and are a core component to the offer we can provide to people with complex health issues. This will be an excellent opportunity for someone with the relevant qualification, skills and experience to be part of this valued service.

Main duties of the job

You will provide clinical intervention, leadership and training on the delivery of care for children and young people in Ipswich Hospital who have mental health needs.

To achieve this they will be responsible for developing care packages and programs of care for young people including those who self-harm or have an eating disorder. The will work closely with partners to enable multi-agency input around the child or young person and their family's needs.

The role will extend support to staff working across ESNEFT through offering both formal and informal training and education as a means of building confidence and skills within the workforce.

They will establish relationships with colleagues across the hospital to provide enhanced specialist level supervision and guidance, using person-centred care, therapeutic skills, sharing of knowledge, evidence based practice and critical reflective practice.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Provide specialist assessment
  • Advise on the care of children and young people who have mental health needs and their carers/families
  • Onward referral and liaison with appropriate community specialist services
  • Support staff by teaching strategies to effectively care for children and young people who have mental health needs
  • Provide a range of psychosocial interventions and emotional support to promote health and wellbeing for children and young people
  • Ensure that all legal requirements relating to mental capacity, safeguarding and mental health are considered and adhered to in relation to patient care
  • Participate in case conferences and multi-agency reviews where required within the acute hospital
  • Work collaboratively with health, social and voluntary sector services to achieve coordinated care and safe discharge
  • Provide innovative training and education to staff within the organisation at all levels, to improve staff attitudes, knowledge, skills and confidence, in line with best practice and guidance

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse or Health or Social Care professional
  • Post registration qualification / training in CYP mental health


Desirable

  • Additional nursing qualification.
  • Degree/ Masters level qualification relevant to CYP


Experience

Essential

  • Significant post-registration clinical experience of working with children and young people with mental health needs in different settings
  • Experience of recent involvement in practice/ service development.
  • Experience of working with groups and individuals in a variety of roles and settings
  • Demonstrated experience of working as an autonomous practitioner
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage services
  • Experience of professional supervision of staff
  • Experience of audit/ evaluating clinical practice


Desirable

  • Experience of undertaking staff performance reviews and planned development of staff
  • Experience of working with patients/ clients to develop practice


Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Ability to use a range of therapeutic skills
  • Enhanced knowledge of CYP mental health
  • Incorporating and demonstrating competencies including person-centred care, therapeutic skills, sharing knowledge, best practice, and critical reflective practice at enhanced specialist level
  • Enhanced communication skills.


Desirable

  • Knowledge of research methods and methodologies
  • Understanding of competency frameworks
  • Experience of supporting systematic practice development/ quality improvement
