We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced speech and language therapist to lead our general acute inpatient and stroke services at The Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

We have well established videofluoroscopy and FEES services in both in and outpatients and you will be an integral part of these. As such competencies in advanced dysphagia and VFSS are essential. A track record of leadership experience is keyas you will lead a team of band 6s and 5s within these services as well as liaising with senior staff across all four hospital sites to ensure equitable, safe and modern clinical approaches.

As a regional centre and teaching hospital you will see general inpatients in a variety of specialisms including care of the elderly, respiratory medicine, cardiothoracics, renal medicine, oncology and critical care.

Our SLT service is committed to developing our staff and we robustly support continuing professional development with a variety of internal events and external learning.

Main duties of the job

  • Assessment and management of patients with acute dysphagia and communication difficulties in acute inpatients and stroke.
  • VFL and FEES.
  • Line management and supervision of junior staff.

    Job responsibilities

    Assessment of patients in acute services with dysphagia and/or communication disorders utilising a variety of approaches.

    Mental capacity assessments.

    Therapy, treatment and management of dysphagia and communication disorders.

    Independently carrying out VF and FEES assessments.

    Independent caseload management.

    Line management and supervision of junior staff.

    Leading on training, teaching, audit and other activities of governance.

    Leading on the development of inpatient and stroke services for SLT.

    Liaison with SLT counterparts across the sites to ensure equity, harmonisation and modernisation of services.
