Our team cannot wait to welcome you with open arms to our fantastic 33 bedded general, colorectal, upper GI, urology and emergency surgical ward. Receiving patients from SAU, ED, critical care and clinics, our friendly, fast-paced and high turn-over ward will facilitate education, skill development and leadership opportunities.

With the help of our existing staff members, 5 sisters/charge nurse and two new ward managers, we strive to support you in playing your part in the care and support of our patients who really do need us to be at the top of our game.

Main duties of the job

Leading from the front, coordinating the ward, attending ward rounds, liaising with the multi-disciplinary team, supporting the ward staff and working closely with the 2 ward managers allows the appointable candidate to enhance their nursing skills, knowledge, leadership style and adapt to all situations which may come their way.

Ward 12 offers a nurturing environment to ensure all your questions and queries are answered and can signpost you in the right direction, thereforeour surgical ward is compiled of multi-specialist teams such as Colorectal, Urology, Upper GI, Vascular, General Surgery and Orthopaedics. Caring for the acutely unwell, pre and post operative patients, attending doctors ward rounds, medication rounds, providing personal care and facilitating in safe discharges, Ward 12 offers plenty of learning opportunities whilst working closely with the educators and practice development facilitators.

To ensure effective communication, we hold regular ward meetings, daily safety huddles, monthly Ward 12 newsletters and keep an open-door policy for any further questions which you may have.

Job description

Job responsibilities

As a general surgical ward, you will be caring for patients who have undergone or will require surgery during their admission. To mention a few...Appendectomies, cholecystectomies, bowel resections and stoma formations, stent insertions, amputations, angioplasties and laparotomies.

Your main roles and responsibilities will be:-Lead and co-ordinate the ward, working closely with the ward managers, complete safe discharges, admit and transfer patients, and support the ward team.

This role will open up the opportunity to attend further training in order for you to complete ward audits, appraisals, use the healthroster and promote team learning through teaching sessions by working closely with our clinical education team.

We have surgeons who are outstanding and leaders in their field as well as educational leaders regionally and nationally. The structure we have developed for 7 day consultant led ward rounds has reduced length of stay and provides the best possible medical care for our patients.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of leadership experience and learning.
  • Awareness of recent advances within Nursing practice
  • Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
  • Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
  • Experience of implementing changes to benefit patients and improve nursing practice ? Knowledge of Ethical issues
  • Knowledge of Ethical issues


Desirable

  • Knowledge of Research and Development


Qualifications and Education

Essential

  • Appropriate NMC Registration
  • Diploma or Degree in Nursing
  • NMC recognised Mentorship qualification


Desirable

  • Post registration qualification in area of speciality area
