An exciting opportunity has arisen to offer a Specialist Nursing role working within the children & young peoples team in Worcestershire alongside our Childrens Community Nursing (Orchard) service and Special School Nursing service. You will initially support and develop the setting up of a Community Paediatric Epilepsy Specialist Nursing service working closely with the LD Adult team who manage patients with a range of complex epilepsies and learning related disabilities. You will strengthen clinical and professional leadership in epilepsy care, working in an integrated way to complement the roles of clinical colleagues contributing to continuity of care for children and young people with epilepsy who are under the care of a named community paediatrician and attend a special school in Worcestershire.

This permanent role is for 30 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

To fulfil this specialist role you will provide visible and high-quality, professional leadership and expert clinical practice.

Reporting directly to the Clinical Lead for Childrens Nursing, you will spend a minimum of 50% of your working hours in clinical practice, working with children and young people with epilepsy, their family and carers, communities, statutory and voluntary agencies.

This role requires effective written and verbal communication skills to communicate complex information to professionals, patients and their families. Empathy, compassion and emotional support will need to be given when handling difficult conversations and situations.

The post holder will ensure the integrity and quality of the offer to children and young people is maintained through an annual audit of the epilepsy service Trust and ICB initiatives are interpreted and applied to the service.

The successful candidate will be a Registered Childrens Nurse with current NMC registration have undertaken Paediatric Epilepsy Training Course PET1,2,3 (or be willing to undertake within 12 months) Independent non-medical prescriber V300 (or commitment to undertake within 1 year of starting in post) relevant neurological experience in a position of responsibility (Band 6) and be able to evidence working with children and young people with epilepsy.

Job description

Job responsibilities

You will have clinical responsibility for a group of patients in a defined caseload, liaising and acting as a specialist resource, providing enhanced health and quality of life outcomes for children and young people with epilepsy by education and teaching sessions to promote the understanding of people with epilepsy. Working with the lead clinician(s) to promote and develop clinical innovations in the specialist area in line with local and national guidelines. Linking with other nurse specialists within the epilepsy field to ensure continuity of practice and care working directly with adult specialist and non-specialist services to facilitate the transition of young people to adult services.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Childrens Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Degree
  • Paediatric Epilepsy Training Course (PET 1,2,3) or willing to undertake within 12 months.
  • Independent non-medical prescriber (V300) OR commitment to undertake V300 within 1 year of starting in post.
  • Relevant further professional development particularly in relation to the patient group (neurology or learning disabilities)
  • I understand that I will be asked to provide original certificates to verify my qualifications at point of offer


Desirable

  • Professional Diploma in Epilepsy Care or equivalent experience

Experience

  • Evidence of continuing professional development in the field of Epilepsy within the past two years, demonstrating an ongoing commitment to the specialism
