A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a band 6 registered nurse to join our innovative team on ward 5b where we care for patient's requiring surgical assessment. Emergency surgical nursing is an interesting, challenging and rewarding specialty where there is opportunity to enhance knowledge and clinical skills as well as deliver fundamental aspects of nursing care. We are looking for a highly motivated, organised nurse who is forward-thinking and wants to work within a highly regarded multi-disciplinary team. As a team we are always looking to improve and develop our service. We strive to offer safe, effective and outstanding care to our patients using evidence-based practice. We are looking for an approachable and friendly individual who prides themselves on developing others by assisting with teaching and staff development.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic registered nurse with an interest in general surgery, excellent communication skills and the ability to work as a part of a team. Applicants should have the ability to lead on, prioritise and manage the health care needs of a group of patients, showing commitment to develop competencies and specialist skills of their own and other team members. Candidates should be supportive to all bands and members of the multidisciplinary team with whom we work closely. They should also be willing to support and supervise junior and less experienced staff and students, acting as a role model. We are looking for a special person with the ability to communicate effectively, with excellent time management skills and the confidence and competence to work both independently and within the team.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Adult Nurse
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation and commitment to lifelong learning


Experience

Desirable

  • Experience, through placement or employment, of working in an acute clinical environment
  • Previous experience in elective GI or emergency surgery
  • Experience, through employment, of leadership in the workplace
  • Interest in teaching and imparting knowledge


Knowledge / Skills

Essential

  • Self-motivated and able to work under own initiative and prioritise workload. Work with enthusiasm and a genuine interest within the MDT.
  • Personally resilient and able to manage complexity and work in an ambiguous or changing environment. Demonstrates an ability to question and challenge practice in a constructive way.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to use clinical reasoning skills and techniques to assess, diagnose, plan and offer a range of treatment options.
  • Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the trusts values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice. This includes supervising non-registered and less experienced staff.
