To support the senior sister and matron in the delivery of the highest standard and quality of care to patients attending the department. This role will involve assisting in the management, supervision and co-ordination of nursing activity with the department, ensuring standards are monitored and maintained and where necessary taking the appropriate corrective action.

The role demands a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the departments to whom staff, patients and their families can turn to for assistance, advice and support.

Main duties of the job

To manage the day to day running of the department supported by the Outpatient senior team and Matron.

To perform as trainer, assessor, mentor and supervisor for nursing staff as required for safe and effective delivery of SACT treatments.

To assist in the preparations and running of clinics.

To investigate and assist in the response to formal complaints and incidents.

To assist in the monitoring of attendance for all staff, monitor staff sickness and staff returns to work after absence.

To be responsible for co-ordinating and monitoring duty rosters, ensuring adequate skill mix to ensure appropriate support for clinical activity.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC membership
  • To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998 - or working towards
  • Commitment to continued professional development


Desirable

  • Evidence of post registration academic achievement at degree level or equivalent


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience at Band 5
  • Experience, knowledge and interest in caring for Oncology patients


Desirable

  • Core systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) competencies


Further Training

Essential

  • Venepuncture/ cannulation


Desirable

  • Leadership course/ qualification

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly motivated and enthusiatic
  • Able to work collaboratively and autonomously
  • Led and/or worked on a change project which has improved patient care/ experience
