This role is set in a busy acute specialist nursing service, where the team manage and optimize care for people living with diabetes.

This post is for a band 7 nurse to support the inpatient diabetes specialist nurse service. You will need to have a good knowledge and confidence to manage this group of patients. You will demonstrate strong leadership skills and be able to manage staff cross site.

The post holder will be a key resource for other medical and nursing staff within the team, contributing to patient reviews and policy reviews.

There will be opportunities to work alongside clinicians who work in the renowned Leicester Diabetes Centre which conducts first class clinical research in diabetes.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialist diabetes advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients/clients and relatives/carers that are in hosptial and act as a support for the team. Supervision and collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team in line with local and national targets and in accordance to NHS standards and guidelines.

To work alongside clinicians to implement Diabetes Care Accreditation Programme (DCAP) within the Trust.

Be willing to undertake audits and clinical supervision with the inpatient specialist nurse team. Be able to work across site

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will work as part of the specialist diabetes team, as an autonomous practitioner in the provision of evidence based and high-quality diabetes care within the diabetes team . Ensuring good quality consistent care for people with diabetes and to enhance the care of patients with diabetes across all pathways.
  • To deliver a seamless service through the development of enhanced MDT processes and communication.
  • To contribute and provide high quality training for patients, staff and carers.
  • To develop and enhance their skills and knowledge required for managing diabetes effectively.
  • To support and develop with colleagues the promotion and development of services for diabetes patients across the primary/secondary interface and throughout the pathways.
  • To have relevant expertise, skills including prescribing and knowledge related to possible investigations and treatment options and so to provide the patient with the necessary information to make informed choices.
  • Where appropriate prescribe appropriate treatment as an independent non-medical prescriber.
  • In conjunction with the diabetes specialist nurse team, ensure the provision of a comprehensive nurse led service for patients in the hospital setting

  • 1st level registered nurse
  • Post-basic Specialist Qualification
  • Recognised Specialist Qualification Teaching qualification
  • Nurse prescriber or willingness to complete training


Desirable

  • Msc or Equivalent qualification or willingness to complete
  • Non-medical prescribing

  • appropriate IT skills

  • 5 years post -registration
