Main duties of the job

Are you an experienced paediatric intensive care staff nurse ready for a new challenge? Would you like to work for an innovative forward-thinking hospital? Every patient is special to us, which means every nurse who cares for them must be too.

We are a 14 bedded tertiary unit offering multiple specialities, an onsite regional retrieval service and a nurse led ECMO service. A significant part of our work is cardiac surgery as we are the cardiac surgical centre for Thames Valley and the Wessex region. We are part of Southampton's Children's Hospital which is a 115 bedded hospital catering for both local and regional children from the Wessex Region including the Channel Islands. Specialities include Cardiac, Renal, Neuro and Trauma.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To be responsible for assisting the Senior Sister /Charge Nurse in the management of the ward over a 24-hour period, ensuring high standards of care are maintained using available resources.

To act as team leader in the supervision of the professional work of nursing staff at Band 5 and below, exercising good leadership and control.

Work as part of the larger multi professional team within the Children's Hospital ensuring professional and sound communication when liaising around management of admissions and discharges.

The role requires a flexible working pattern that covers a range of day shifts and night shifts.

Act as a clinical expert and bedside educator ensuring ongoing development of junior staff that is reflective in achieving excellence.

Take charge of the unit ensuring safe and appropriate allocation of staff to reflect the clinical demand.

Must be able to evidence a certified Paediatric Intensive Care qualification and experience of nursing children with congenital cardiac defects is essential.

  • Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
  • Commitment to the post and Care Group responsibilities
