An exciting opportunity for a band 6 speech and language therapist wishing to develop their career in stroke services has arisen at Royal Sussex County Hospital. This post will suit band 5 or 6 therapists wishing to deepen knowledge and skills in the management of swallowing difficulties and acquired communication disorders. You will provide assessment and management for patients on the acute stroke unit with support from senior colleagues. We are a well established team working in the invigorating environment of a teaching hospital with regional specialties. As such there are excellent opportunities to participate in a wide variety of continuing professional development activities and to develop skills and in both videofluoroscopy and FEES.

As part of the development of stroke services in this Trust you will also be invited to be a part of a Saturday working rota with other band 6 therapists in the team, under the lead speech and language therapist for stroke. Training and support for this is provided.

UHSussex speech and language therapy service has recently merged across legacy Trusts, and we are now a large service providing speech and language therapy services at several hospitals and specialties including regional specialist services.

Main duties of the job

1. Assessment and management of dysphagia in the specialist caseload.

2. Assessment andmanagement of acquired communication disorders in the specialist caseload.

3. Mental capacity assessments for patients with acquired communication difficulties where required.

4. Attendance at and training in VFSS and FEES.

5. Service development and governance activities eg clinical audit.

6. Teaching, training and mentoring of junior SaLTs, other staff and students. I

Job responsibilities

1. Independently assess, diagnose and manage a range of swallowing and communication disorders

2. Independently carry our mental capacity assessments and support decision making for people with acquired cognitive or linguistic disorders.

3. Independently carry out therapy, treatment programmes and dispense specialist advice in the clinical area.

4. Be fully involved in both VFSS and FEES.

5. Carry our a range of service development and governance activities.

6. Deliver teaching, training and mentoring to a variety of other clinicians and carers.

7. Part of a Saturday hours rota (3.75 hours approximately every 6 weeks)
