We are looking for a Laboratory Manger to join the Clinical Chemistry Department at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories, in our automated lab. The Chemistry service has a 24/7 presence across three hospital trusts and provides a diagnostic service to over 100 trusts nationally and 150 GP practices in Merseyside, Cheshire and beyond.

The successful candidate will manage day to day operations of the Clinical Chemistry Service and take a lead role in the implementation of new systems, equipment and techniques as directed. They will be required to supervise a wide range of technical procedures in the automated laboratories and will have in depth knowledge of the science behind the procedures to inform decision making.

Reporting into the Service Manager and working closely with the Blood Sciences Management Team, they will ensure we deliver a high-quality service, providing an excellent experience for our patients that meets regulatory and operational performance targets.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone to develop their leadership and management skills in a dynamic department. The successful candidate will have a positive approach to the role. They will be able to demonstrate resilience and have already established leadership skills. They will also demonstrate key strengths in both individual and team communication and will have an in-depth knowledge of the science behind the processing to good judgement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage the technical service of a major section of the department or a group of smaller sections and will take a lead role in the implementation of new equipment / techniques as directed. The post holder is required to be able to supervise a wide range of technical procedures, including complex specialist diagnostic tests, in the section they are currently managing. They will also have in depth knowledge of the science behind those procedures in order to be able to train / educate and problem solve. The post holder will be expected to undertake departmental managerial duties as delegated by the Service Manager. The post holder will take department wide responsibility for a major aspect of service delivery. The post holder will be a key member of the Directorate Quality Management Team.

1.1 To have supplemented degree level qualifications by having achievedknowledge and skills to Masters degree level.

1.2 To maintain specialist technical and analytical knowledge by participating inCPD.

1.3 To maintain State Registration with the Health Professions Council (HCPC).

2.2 To use empathy and understanding to ensure that technical, clinical andlinguistic barriers to understanding are overcome.

2.3 To explain to service users departmental policies relating to contentiousissues, that conflict with laboratory service targets.

2.4 To report results to clinicians and other service users in accordance withSOPs.

2.5 To explain technical issues relating to results to clinicians and other serviceusers.

2.6 To provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding appropriatetesting protocols e.g. timing of samples for Paracetamol analysis.

2.7 To provide advice to clinicians and other service users regarding specimentypes, timing of collection of specimen and turnaround times.

2.8 To evaluate and ensure appropriate action is taken in the event of a conflict ofpriorities relating to concurrent demands placed upon the service.

2.9 To respond to requests for assistance from other trusts that have experiencedequipment failure with a positive and helpful approach.

2.10 To advise, organise and motivate those students, MLAs and BiomedicalScientists working in the section

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • FIBMS/MSc or equivalent
  • HCPC registration


Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of experience in specialised techniques
  • Evidence of appropriate practical experience
  • Evidence of in house staff training
  • Evidence of previous experience in ordering consumables/services
