Main duties of the job

Cellular Pathology invites applications for the post of Biomedical Scientist to join their friendly team. An excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and suitably experienced individual to contribute to a rapidly developing service.The department supports ROSE clinics, a Mohs service & there is scanning equipment to support the digital agenda. The post-holder will be encouraged to participate in this project as we progress to a fully digitised pathology serviceThe department operates 6am-7pm Mon-Fri & Sat 7am-5pm. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the rotational Bank Holiday service-approx. 1 per annum, currently not Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day or Good Friday, & the 'on-call' rota.Applications from candidates with a background in cellular pathology would be considered preferable for these posts, however the department also invites applications from those with an IBMS accredited degree, willing to complete IBMS Registration portfolio & attain certificate of competence within 12 months.These posts also present excellent opportunities for personal development and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is also actively supported. The laboratory is IBMS-approved for the training and education of undergraduate and STP students and is UKAS accredited.Main duties of the job

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Main responsibilities and skills required for the roles will include:

Undertake processing of histological and cytological specimens for diagnostic and monitoring purposes.

Provide accurate, timely, and appropriate analytical data/results.

Deliver a high-quality service that meets the needs of the patients and service users.

To supervise training and support staff as directed and required.

Attention to detail, working under pressure, teamwork and well-developed interpersonal skills.

The ideal candidate will have cellular pathology laboratory experience in a range of different areas, to include specifically embedding and microtomy. Other desirable experience would include, cytology, frozens, specials stains and immunohistochemistry.

The department operates a 6-day working pattern (approximately 1 in 5 Saturday shifts) and extended opening hours:06.00 - 19.00 Monday - Friday07.00 - 17.00 SaturdayWe also run an on-call service and successful candidates will be required to participate in this after training has been given.We highly recommend that any potential candidates contact the department to discuss these posts prior to submitting an application.Interviews will be held in September.

Cellular Pathology includes neuropathology, paediatric pathology, immunohistochemistry, histology research and development and incorporates the departments of cytology, biomedical imaging, electron microscopy and the provision of adult and paediatric mortuary services to the hospital, City Council, and local coroners.

  • HCPC approved Biomedical Science degree (BSc) or other HCPC approved degree/top ups
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of current CPD activities

  • Previous experience in a medical laboratory
  • IT competency (Microsoft, Outlook, hospital IT systems)
