An exciting career opportunity has arisen in the Medical Photography Department at the Queen Victoria Hospital Foundation Trust. We have a vacancy for a senior videographer.

You will join a busy team offering a wide range of services that include clinical photography/videography, broadcast quality video recording and post production, graphics, publicity and promotional media services.

The post holder will be expected to partake in all of these areas, as well as assisting in the day to day running of the Medical Photography Department and deputising for the departmental manager during periods of absence or unavailability.

The successful applicant will be qualified within the profession of medical photography, have at least three year's working experience and have or be eligible for AHCS/IMI registration.

Main duties of the job

Clinical videography both in the studio and around the hospital

PR and corporate video services

Assisting the team lead with the day to day running of the department

Deputising when the team lead is absent or unavailable

Assistant managing the graphics and printing service

Job description

Job responsibilities

Assistant to manager
  • Deputise for the departmental manager as necessary.
  • Delegate and make decisions on the day to day activities within the department. This will include assignment of work, supervision of employees, quality control, and time keeping.
  • Where appropriate be the first point of contact for handling queries or complaints from patients, their relatives, criminal injuries board, police, solicitors etc. Also to assess the nature and gravity of issues and where necessary refer them to appropriate personnel.
  • To work in collaboration with the departmental manager and other specialists to develop, maintain and commission new systems.
  • To work in collaboration with the departmental manager to regularly review costings and charges for services.
  • Design operational printed matter specific to the department e.g. photographic request forms, job sheets, invoice preparation forms.
  • Responsibility for providing access to the photographic image database, deciding and authorising which level access new staff should have.
  • Assisting with regular audits of the database, particularly monitoring downloads.
  • Responsibility for Policy/Service Development. Assists in Implementing policies related to the medical photography service, proposes changes to practices for area. Ensures implementation of policies

Analytical & Judgemental Skills

Assist in compiling and analysing patient activity data to use for service improvement and development. Analysis and audit of medical photography/video to improve quality standards

Marketing and Graphics Service

General
  • Responsibility for supervision/planning and production of all in house illustrated and printed material related to the needs of the trust including:
  • Trust marketing,
  • public relations,
  • patient information leaflets,
  • ward and patient information documents,
  • ward information poster
  • Implement service policies and procedures and be responsible for quality control by ensuring high standards are maintained. Within this responsibility be the custodian of the Trust wide corporate image by ensuring it is standardised and professionally portrayed.
  • Manage marketing and graphics productions deciding upon the best use of resources which may involve utilising departmental staff as necessary. This will involve prioritising workload
  • Liaise with departmental manager on graphics and printing equipment procurement. Tests and assess new equipment with a view towards potential purchase maintain communication with suppliers, technicians and IT personnel to ensure Trust compatibility
  • Be responsible for the introduction and first line maintenance of equipment directly related to graphic production e.g. hardware, software, bulk printing devices, large format printer and folding machine.

Graphics Financial
  • Work directly with the departmental manager to:
  • Develop and maintain the graphics database to monitor workflow, costs and charges.
  • Maintain an up to date price list based on material costs, equipment running costs and staff costs.
  • Monitor cost savings to the trust by providing accurate in-house production costs against those of subcontracted external services.
  • Help to achieve agreed income generation targets.
  • Report to department manager on a regular basis to discuss costs, savings and charges.
  • Produce accurate jobs sheets that form the basis of Trust invoices.
  • Exercises good stock control to manage resources effectively.

Graphics Training
  • Be responsible for training and supervising staff in the use of hardware, specialist software and equipment in this area of work.
  • Maintain an up to date specialist knowledge and practical expertise in all software programmes and output systems.

Clinical Photography/Videography
  • Supervise the Medical Photographers to ensure standards and quality are adhered to.
  • Work with the other members of the team to develop the medical photographic service by evaluation and incorporating new techniques
  • Work entirely unsupervised in all clinical areas within the Queen Victoria Hospital that include Medical Illustration Studio, Operating Theatres, Dressing Rooms, Minor Injuries Department, Out Patients, Pre Assessment, Wards, Maxillofacial Unit, Orthodontic department, Corneo Plastic Unit, Burns Unit
  • Take responsibility for informing patients, relatives and/or carers of the nature and purposes of clinical photography/video, being sympathetic to individual needs
  • Maintain a process of Continued Professional Development and keep an up to date knowledge of national medical illustration audit standards with particular regard to clinical specialities seen at the Queen Victoria Hospital
  • Co-operate with, and use initiative to direct clinical staff towards the best videography methods/practices to achieve optimum result.
  • Be responsible for performing duties according to the Data protection Act, the QVH Photographic and Video Recording Policy and the Institute of Medical Illustrators guidelines
  • Oversee and help manage the uploading of images sent in by patients for the virtual clinics. Liaising with the system team and IT if any issues arise
  • Responsibility for Patient/Client Care

Provides specialist clinical photography/video technical services using national standards.
  • Physical Effort

Restricted position frequent light physical effort for several short periods, carrying camera equipment. Lifting paper, boxes, trays, pushing trolleys. Potential long hours standing in theatre cases

Exposure to unpleasant conditions, burns, ITU, theatres. Sometimes handles hazardous material such as printer inks

Audio-Visual presentation:
  • Have a working knowledge of Audio-Visual Systems within the Trust and Assist in their operation usually in conjunction with the Audio-Visual Technician

Stock Control
  • Be responsible for monitoring stock levels of consumables and report as necessary

Pricing and cost awareness other than graphics services
  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of the running costs of the department and assist in ensuring that income generation work is appropriately charged
  • Take responsibility for ensuring costs to the department are minimise
  • Liaise with colleagues to ensure the departments price list is up to date

Workflow Management
  • Fully understand and operate the department system of workflow management from the production of job sheets to processing invoices. Also, instruct junior staff in the strict adherence of this system

Qualifications

Essential

  • AHCS registration Evidence of CPD
  • BSc Medical Illustration or equivalent or able to demonstrate specialist knowledge within this field through practical experience

  • Advanced qualification in Clinical photography/video


Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience working in a Medical Illustration Department including all of the following areas: Employee Supervision Invoices, charges and costings Staff training Clinical videography Graphic Design


Desirable

  • Experience of working in a role that is not directly supervised
  • An understanding of: Budget Management Staff Management Service policies and procedures
