ITU is a 10 bedded combined High Dependency and Intensive Care unit that cares for patients who are critically ill providing all aspects of nursing care and multidisciplinary rehabilitation after critical illness.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse with a qualification in Critical Care nursing, and experience in educating and mentoring staff. The role will require you to lead and facilitate the continuing professional development within the Critical Care unit for all grades of staff, with the focus of positively influencing the quality of care delivered to patients. You will be integral to the planning and co-ordination of educational activities and must demonstrate the ability to manage resources effectively to meet the needs of the service. An in depth knowledge of Intensive care across the specialist field, and evidence of effective leadership, excellent communication skills, developed organisational and interpersonal skills are essential. The role will require a flexible working pattern including occassional unsocial working hours to meet the changing development needs of the team.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will supervise and support staff in line with educator requirements, ensuring the MDT have the skills to assess care needs and implement programs of planned care, as the Nursing Educational Lead. You will actively participate in clinical practice as an effective role model mentor and preceptor to junior members of the MDT whilst promoting & maintaining effective communication with all disciplines internally & across directorial boundaries within the Trust. At times you will be expected to work as part of the Intensive care senior nursing team by maintaining a Band 6 clinical role and will represent the unit at Critical Care network education events. The applicant must hold a post graduate qualification in Critical Care, (e.g. Step 2 and step 3 competencies or equivalent), a teaching/assessing/ mentoring qualification is essential, and previous experience of the Band 6 role is preferred. There is the expecation that the candidate will be willing to progress to achieve a PGCE or equivalent, if not already.

We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities

Develop educational work plans, consistent with departmental objectives, ensuring these are realistic and achievable, taking into account multidisciplinary team members abilities and developmental needs.

Prioritise daily activities to respond to changing circumstances, providing a seamless educational service to users.

Objectively assess the work of multidisciplinary team members, providing clear constructive feedback in a manner most likely to improve/maintain performance.

Contribute to the ongoing audit cycle to identify issues which arise during the care of the critically ill patient. Participate in effective implementation of measures to combat these issues.

Monitor the standards of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of educational programs of Critical Care.

Be proactive with audit and monitoring of documentation to ensure that it is produced in accordance with Trust policy and also NMC/HCPC guidelines.

Monitor clinical practice ensuring that all procedures and techniques are carried out in accordance with local competencies and agreed policies and standards.

Act as the patients advocate in all matters relating to his/her care, treatment and welfare

Contribute to recruitment and retention using agreed methods and protocols for staffing and skill mix.

Ensure that departmental/environmental standards are maintained in accordance with Trust policy and Infection Control standards.

Promote and support the implementation of best practice through evidence based approach, participating in audit and challenging historical practices & unprofessional cultures.

Assist with performance reviews of all members of the team, facilitate and monitor performance in line with local competencies and Trust policies.

Assist in the development of Clinical Quality Standards, co-ordinate implementation and audit outcomes with a systematic approach to service users

Ensure that organisational policies are adhered to in respect of sickness absence & performance management.

Prioritise own workload in a manner that promotes job satisfaction & quality service delivery.

Work in a supervisory capacity.

Represent the trust at the Critical care network forums.

Develop links with the relevant university practice placement staff.

Ensure Intensive care education strategies and staff information is kept up-to-date.

  • Must have a good knowledge of equipment relevant to the area.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of policy and procedure in ITU.
