An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Matron to join the current Inpatient Speciality Team in Medicine.

The Matron will be a strong clinical leader, easily identifiable, highly visible and accessible to patients, carers and staff. He/she will have a particular responsibility to support the developments of Clinical Governance and Service Improvement, to modernise patient services and ensure the active involvement of patients and carers in the way services are developed, delivered and evaluated.

The Division provides a wide variety of services which include: Inpatient Renal Services for Northamptonshire, Respiratory, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Stroke, and Elderly Medicine

As a Matron, you will play a key role in maintaining clinical quality and ensuring that clinical governance standards are upheld. You will also have responsibility for nurturing and developing the nursing Team to maximise its potential and focussing on strategies to maintain and improve staff well-being.

Applicants should have held leadership roles from which they can evidence delivering high quality, patient-centred care. Experience in designing and implementing change will be essential to success.

This is not an easy job, but it is very rewarding. You will need to be comfortable being visible, accessible and an authoritative presence.

Main duties of the job

The Matron will provide strong clinical leadership within the Services and be highly visible and accessible to patients. Leading by example he/she will drive up standards of clinical care and have the authority to get the essential components of care right for patients.
  • Be a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in designated clinical areas (eg inpatient and outpatient clinics) to provide professional leadership and managerial assistance, advice and support for the public and staff
  • Responsible for nursing/midwifery standards as set out in the Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines, National Service Frameworks, the Trust's strategic objectives, Nursing and Midwifery Strategy and Care Quality Commission Standards within designated clinical areas
  • Promote a quality and safety culture within the directorate that promotes and values achievement in patient safety and quality
  • Improve the patients' experience within designated clinical areas by assuring the highest standards of clinical care and ensuring that patients are treated with dignity and respect through effective line management and professional leadership of the nursing workforce

The Matron will be accountable for the efficient and effective operational management of the nursing workforce, guaranteeing provision of high-quality evidence based nursing practice which will be delivered within inpatient and outpatient settings. The Matron will be a strongclinical leader, easily identifiable, highly visible and accessible to patients, carers and staff.He/she will have a particular responsibility to support the developments of Clinical Governance and Service Improvement, to modernise patient services and ensure the active involvement of patients and carers in the way services are developed, delivered and evaluated.

Person Specification

Education, Training & Qualifications

Essential

  • Educated to Master's Degree Level, or evidence of working towards/ equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of continuing clinical and professional development.
  • Completion of a clinical leadership programme or equivalent


Desirable

  • Counselling or coaching skills/qualification


Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Experience of managing/ leading a team and coordinating workload
  • Experience of staff performance management
  • Effective clinical leadership and experience in the management of change
  • Managing and supporting staff and patients through the complaints, compliments and concerns process
  • Experience at a Band 7 level, of managing a team and staff performance
  • Experience of managing challenging situations to meet a positive outcome


Desirable

  • Demonstrate evidence of publication/presentation of project findings


Skills

Essential

  • Effective managerial, leadership and motivation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Demonstrable ability to manage a ward/department and undertake challenging conversations
