Macmillan Clinical Psychologist, Macmillan Cancer Support Team (CaPS), Croydon

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated psychologist with experience of working in mental / physical health and an interest in cancer services. You will be working with people with cancer and their families to assess, formulate and deliver high quality psychological care. You will also provide consultation and advice to staff regarding patient management within Croydon University Hospital and community services, such as GPs, mental health services, and voluntary sector organisations. The CAPS service offers a range of therapeutic interventions for patients including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Compassion Focused Therapy.

This post offers an excellent opportunity for professional and clinical development as well as being directly involved in the on-going development of a growing service, helping to expand our group work, forging links with local community groups and training other health professionals.

Applications are invited from HCPC registered Clinical psychologists.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the Macmillan Cancer Psychological Support Team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client's care. Through these assessments, formulate the client's difficulties in order to determine the most appropriate intervention.
  • To deliver high quality, effective psychological treatment and/or management of a client's psychological difficulties, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client's problems, and employing methods of proven efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
  • To make skilled evaluations and decisions about treatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic models and highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, and always evaluating these models and factors within a biopsychosocial framework which includes the impacts of damage/illness on brain functioning.
  • To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.
