Applications are invited for a Consultant Neurophysiologist post across South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. The post is offered on a 10PAs basis, however LTFT applications will be considered.

The department provides a comprehensive range of neurophysiological diagnostic services for patients of all ages (including the neonatal period) in Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Durham, plays an important role in the delivery of the 18-week patient pathway in a number of major specialties and is critical in the diagnosis and understanding of a range of common diseases.

We are looking for a friendly, dynamic and supportive individual to join our service and team in continuing to provide an excellent and comprehensive neurophysiology service. You must possess strong leadership and communication skills and a desire to develop and grow the service. There are close academic links with the Regional Neuroscience Centre at the RVI in Newcastle.

Applicants must possess MRCP, hold a CCST and be on the GMCs Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of being admitted to the GMCs Specialist Register.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to coordinate and deliver the strategic and operational aspects of the Neurophysiology services across the STSFT reflecting national and local priorities. There is no on call commitment associated with this post.

Clinical - Provision and delivery of consultant support to manage patients requiring a range of neurophysiology investigations and diagnostics. Performing NCS/EMG studies and writing own reports. Supervising and reporting physiologist nerve conduction studies. Reporting EEGs, video telemetry recordings and EP studies. Ability to facilitate discussions and onward referrals for patients. Provision of expert knowledge and support to colleagues to assist patient management. Support outpatient services such as EMG / EEG / NCS clinics.Actively participate in the MDT and any other meetings necessary to patient care. Support with the development of neurophysiology services across STSFT.

Administrative - Participate in local and national audit activities relevant to neurophysiology. Attendance at clinical governance activities / meetings. Act as an educational and clinical supervisor for junior medical staff and physiologists in training. Support the delivery of integrated services as required

Research - Participate in existing clinical trials and research. Working with the STSFT research and innovation team assist with the recruitment of potential participants into future research studies.

The post holder is expected to possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post.

The post holder is expected to attend the monthly Directorate meetings. The Clinical Director in the Directorate of Rehabilitation and Elderly Medicine is Dr Richard Telford.

The post holder will be expected to develop the service in keeping with National guidance and Local HImP

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Possess MRCP
• Have spent either 3 years in Higher Training (or equivalent) or 5 years as a Specialist Registrar (or equivalent)
• Hold a CCST and or be on the GMCs Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of being admitted to the GMCs Specialist Register
• Have undertaken additional training in neurophysiology

Desirable

• Have been involved in academic research as part of their training and have both presented and published peer reviewed articles
• Have spent a period of training in research in a discipline appropriate to their intended practice
• Have experience within a neurology setting

Skills

Essential

• Possess good interpersonal and communication skills
• Management & Leadership skills
• Be able to work as part of a team

Desirable

• Have obtained a higher degree by thesis (MD, MCh, MSc)
• Awareness of assessment / appraisal

Experience

• Have experience in training under graduates and post graduates

• Have received further speciality training in Geriatric and General Medicine to a level equivalent to Calman Level III
