We have a number of exciting and challenging new posts in the Offender Healthcare Service at HMP Wandsworth. This is a unique opportunity to be part of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust and to work at one of the largest prisons in the UK. You will assist us to provide excellent primary care and substance misuse services for our population.

Offenders are a challenging population group to work with and they often have complex healthcare needs. Offenders often have chaotic lives in the community and a history of poor engagement with community healthcare services. With high rates of substance misuse and mental health problems, this is a real chance to make a difference.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining us at an exciting time and be involved in the implementation of a Health and Wellbeing Model to improve offender healthcare. You will join our established team of nurses across the prison and will be part of a multidisciplinary team supporting the following services: Primary Care services including First Night in Custody screening, secondary screening, nurse clinics, long term condition management, health promotion Inpatient Unit Emergency Response and Substance Misuse nursing services. You will be supported by our friendly team of healthcare staff in an environment where no two days are the same.

We are looking for Band 6 nurses from a wide variety of backgrounds. Experience of working with patients with substance misuse and mental health issues, or experience within a prison environment would be an advantage, but not essential as full support and training will be provided.

We will be recruiting to the following positions: Substance Misuse Charge Nurse

All applicants will be expected to take a numeracy test and only applicants who pass this test will be interviewed.

Job responsibilities

Practice under direction and demonstrate evidence based clinical decision-making, including risk assessment and care planning.

• To participate in the process of positively supporting and inspiring colleagues within the service to improve standards and quality and to develop professional practice.
• The post holder will be responsible for assessing, delivering and evaluating the effectiveness of nursing care for defined offender groups.
• Implement and evaluate care delivery for offenders with mental health or primary care needs, as delegated by senior staff.
• Have an understanding of partner organisations and is able to work collaboratively and co-ordinate their role in the delivery of individualised care.
• Develop areas of special interest supported by senior practitioners and in keeping with professional development and individual appraisal plans.
• Attendance and participation in effective care co-ordination and the single point referral process.
• Monitor offenders prescribed treatments and administer medications as required in keeping with Medicines Management policies and protocols.
• Engage in supporting offenders to address their own health issues, actively participating in health promotion.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION, PLEASE READ:

All applicants must be willing to undertake National Security Vetting in order to work in a Prison Setting. This will be completed as part of the pre-employment checks through Oxleas and the prison vetting team.

Non-UK passport holders will need to have correct documentation (right to work in the UK) and a Home office Share code.

Address History:

5 years address history will be needed.

Applicants that are not UK Passport holders who provide less than 5 years UK address history will need to provide a Police Certificate which must be in English from where they resided previously.

Applicants who are UK Passport holders who have lived abroad for a period of more than six months during the last three years will need to provide a certificate of good conduct or an overseas police check in English from the countries resided in or visited.
