The Acute Medical Unit at DMH are looking to appoint a Ward Manager to lead the team.We are looking for an appropraitely experienced, highly motivated and committed Registered Nurse
This is an exciting time to join the Acute Medical Team, as we contiue to improve the patients experience who are admitted throught the emergency care pathway.If you like a challenge, are able to work at a very fast pace and enjoy working collaboratively then working as part of our Acute Medical Team may be the job for you. It would place you as a member of a committed, caring and compassionate team, who are supportive and knowledgeable about their specialty.
The successful candidate will have experience in an acute medical unit and be able to demonstrate a knowledge of caring for patients with a wide range of medical conditions. They will possess good organisational skills and be able to contribute to the development of flexible working arrangements within the team.
Main duties of the job
Your role will be to support staff and work within the Acute Medical Unit alongside the multidisciplinary team. You will support and develop the team through change. You will have responsibility for the management of the department ensuring high quality patient care whilst maintaining and improving performance. You will provide strong leadership and have extensive knowledge and expertise in this area of nursing. You will be responsible to the Matron and be expected to deputize in her absence.

We provide hospital services from two acute sites - Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. We have a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland and provide care from community hospitals in Chester-le-Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale as well as over 80 other community based settings and providing care in patients' homes.

Job responsibilities
Carry out duties in keeping with NMC Code of Conduct and ensure other members of nursing staff practice within said code.
Sets and monitors standards of quality nursing care over a 24 hour period by co-coordinating the care given by nurses, medical staff and social workers, alongside any other professionals directly involved in patient care on the department.
Supervises the delivery of quality nursing care. Praises and corrects team members as appropriate, and is involved in personal development of the workforce using KSF/performance review.
Ensure that resources are appropriately are utilised to maximum effectiveness against workload and activity of the Acute Medical Unit.
Responsible for the health, safety and welfare of the staff, patients and visitors under his/her control, as far as is reasonably practicable and in compliance with statutory duty, e.g., C.O.S.H.H. and Manual Handling of Loads. This responsibility to include provision of systems of work place of work and work equipment that are safe and without risk to health.
Reports on levels of nursing care quality to nurse management.
Engage in the recruitment process.
Handles complaints by patients, members of the public and staff, in accordance with Trust Policies.
Ensures that sufficient information is available for relatives and patients, both written and verbal and provides access to further information as required.
Promote and maintain a culture of patient & staff incident reporting in accordance with trust guidelines.
Carry out appraisal and assisting staff in planning their PDP
Work within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of care to patients on the Acute Medical Unit.
As a senior member of the team support junior staff in addressing health education and promotional needs.
Identify and safeguarding concerns and act on them.
Ensure accurate and legible records are kept in accordance with Trust policy and guidelines.
Ensure rights, dignity and confidentiality of the patient is protected at all times.
Act as patient advocate in all matters relating to his/her care, treatment and welfare.
Contribute to the development of audit systems and data analysis/management within the department, ensuring changes in best practice are embedded in the Acute Medical Unit.
Develop clinical protocols/guidelines and standards to facilitate practice developments.
Keep up to date with and lead the application of relevant research findings to practice.
Work within and maintain practice according to NMC Code of Conduct, Trust policies and procedures.
Participate in Trust and service governance and audit projects, leading in their own area of expertise.
