An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Margaret Oates Mother and Baby Inpatient Unit for a Band 5 Staff Nurse post.

The Mother and Baby Unit has the capacity to admit 8 mothers and babies, with a serious mental illness in the third trimester of pregnancy and up to one year post-partum. Babies are admitted with their mothers to build and maintain the mother/infant relationship. The Unit is accredited by the Perinatal Quality Network.

You will be part of a dedicated MDT delivering high quality care to women and their babies. Experience of an acute setting is preferable, however a full induction programme is provided for the successful applicant. You will be an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team, providing a high standard of care. A good working knowledge of child and adult safeguarding is essential. The applicant must have excellent clinical skills, be able to thoroughly assess risk and formulate safe and effective risk management plans. Supervision and learning opportunities are actively encouraged.

Applicants should have a warm and friendly disposition with good communication and interpersonal skills. You must be robust and resourceful and willing to work outside their comfort zone in an environment which can be demanding and stressful.

You will be an RMN/Diploma in Mental Health Nurse, registered with the NMC.

Main duties of the job

You must be an NMC registered RMN/RN (Mental Health) with a keen interest in perinatal mental health as well as experience of working within an acute mental health setting.

If you have experience of working in a perinatal mental health setting, this would be advantageous. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team, working alongside professionals offering a high standard of in-patient care for women and their babies.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Practice:
  • To lead the clinical management of adesignated group of patients, in assessing,planning, implementing and evaluating nursingcare.
  • To observe, report and record changes inpatients physical and psychological health.
  • To work with the MDT in planning and deliveringcare.
  • Support ante and post natal women, accessingobstetric services as necessary.
  • Support women with mental health needsduring labour and delivery of baby.
  • To participate in mentoring Students andPreceptorship of newly qualified RMN staff.
  • To promote, enable and participate in thedelivery of the unit therapeutic activityprogramme.

Quality:
  • Ensure that the service provided is consistentand in line with National quality standards.
  • Actively promote a responsible caring attitude atall times, ensuring that all staff treat patientswith dignity and respect

Communication:
  • To maintain effective communication withpatients, families, unit staff and the clinical team
  • To ensure effective communication and liaison which promote the distribution and receipt ofaccurate information both internally and withallied health and social care agencies
  • Participates in managerial, clinical andsafeguarding supervision.
  • To ensure that all communication is within theboundaries of patient confidentiality.

Risk:
  • To undertake risk assessments and manageeffectively in line with Trust and PerinatalService policy to ensure the delivery of safe andeffective care.
  • To ensure clinical observation of patients ismaintained and increased in response to need.

Policies and Procedures:
  • The duties and responsibilities of the post willbe undertaken in accordance with the policies,procedures and practices of NottinghamshireHealthcare NHS Trust.
  • It is the post holders responsibility to ensurethey keep up to date with these policies and anyother policy documents.

Health Promotion.
  • Assisting patients in maintaining their physicalwell-being,
  • To identify and address health education issuesthat cause risks to patient wellbeing.
  • To take all possible precautions to safeguardthe welfare and safety of staff, patients andvisitors by implementing health, safety andsecurity policies.

This post is eligible for a Golden Hello payment of �2,750 for new starters who are external to the Trust. This is payable in 3 instalments over a 2 year period. This payment is only eligible to new starters who do not already hold a contract of employment with the Trust and have not been an employee of the Trust in the previous 3 years. This post also includes paid enhancements for unsocial hours working during night, weekends and bank holidays.
