The Pharmacy Department at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ambitious and forward thinking, striving to ensure that the patient is always at the heart of everything we do.

A rare opportunity has arisen to apply for the role of Chief Pharmacist due to retirement of the current post holder.

We are seeking an exceptional and dynamic pharmacy leader with a proven track record of delivering innovation, transformation and clinical, technical and operational excellence in pharmacy and medicines optimisation services.

You will provide specialist expertise and delegated responsibility from the CEO for all aspects of medicines optimisation, ensuring compliance with statutory responsibilities.

You will also set the strategic direction, provide professional expertise and empower, support and develop your teams with compassion and care.

The role includes unique opportunities for leading at the forefront of personalised medicine, advanced medicinal technologies, research and digital excellence along with delivering modernised services within planned new hospital builds.

You must demonstrate outstanding leadership skills, be highly motivated and resilient. Excellent interpersonal, organisational and time management skills are also essential. Representation and contribution at national pharmacy networks and professional groups is expected.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialist expertise and delegated responsibility from the CEO for all aspects of medicines optimisation, ensuring compliance with statutory responsibilities. This includes Superintendent Pharmacist in respect of registered pharmacy premises, Trust Accountable Officer for Controlled Drugs and Medicines Homecare.

Ensure all relevant regulatory licenses and registrations are maintained including with the Home Office, MHRA and GPhC.

Chief Pharmacist SRO for East Genomics Medicines Alliance.

Provide professional leadership to pharmacy staff and be responsible for their development and support. Enable professional career frameworks and changes in line with NHS England including support for undergraduates, post registration development, pharmacist prescribing, clinical leadership and research.

Provide professional and clinical leadership for pharmacy and medicines optimisation and transformation to ensure services are progressive, responsive, patient focused, safe, efficient and effective.

Enable excellent partnership working NHS England and ICB stakeholders.

Ensure and support the delivery of research, audit, improvement and evaluation to improve outcomes and service development.

Meet financial Responsibilities through cost effective use of resources and medicines procurement.

Engage with regional and national organisations and networks to ensure that services are at the forefront of practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registration as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Masters level degree in Pharmacy or equivalent as approved by the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain
  • Post graduate qualification relevant to hospital pharmacy practice
  • Management qualification relevant to the NHS at diploma or masters level.
  • Evidence of commitment to Continuing Professional Development


Desirable

  • Recognised training in education or professional tutoring and mentoring


Experience

Essential

  • Recent practice (within the last 5 years) in a senior leadership role within hospital pharmacy as either a Chief Pharmacist of a District General Hospital or Deputy Chief Pharmacist of a Teaching Trust
  • Extensive experience within a hospital pharmacy environment including relevant experience at senior management level
  • Business planning and business case development with project and financial management
  • Developing a positive clinical practice environment, empowering all pharmacy services to deliver high-quality and safe care
  • Operational and staff management in the NHS within Pharmacy Services
  • Supporting the effective delivery of a portfolio of clinical research trials, both academic and commercial
  • Dealing with conflict and working with colleagues to agree remedial action as required
  • Working with executive teams and giving assurance on services
  • Budget management experience and experience of delivering productivity and efficiency improvements
  • Leading transformational quality improvement projects and change management.
  • Procurement and tendering processes and contract management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Experience within both clinical and technical areas of pharmacy practice
  • Experience of strategic medicines management both with internal and external stakeholders
  • Audit experience and interpretation of complex data

Knowledge

Essential

  • All regulatory frameworks and required governance arrangements for medicines
  • Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Clinical Practice principles and Good Distribution Practice.
  • Quality Management Systems as applied to pharmacy technical services.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience with management and response to Medicine Guidance Notes, MHRA Alerts, CQC inspections, Internal and external auditing, Serious incident investigation and management of untoward events
